Open Question: Would a Hofbrauhaus-Colonial Gardens work?

by Steve Magruder » Tue May 10, 2011 2:45 pm

Undoubtedly, many of you (including yours truly) have been to the wonderful Hofbrauhaus restaurant and beer garden in Newport.

I'm just asking a basic question: Would this concept work at the Colonial Gardens location, reusing its current landmarked building, and given its own beer garden history?

Sure, this isn't the most German part of town in the Iroquois/Kenwood Hill area, but with the amphitheater across the street and the new coffee shop a few doors down, I think this would be one good idea amongst other possible good ideas for the site.

Would you go for this?

By the way, for those who don't know what Hofbrauhaus is, here's a link: http://www.hofbrauhausnewport.com/

I'd definitely go! I love the whole concept. Is there anywhere you can get the huge steins of beer in town now?

Not sure how well it would work in that area. Main Street? Yeah. I think Hofbrauhaus depends in part on tourists. Plus, I think people from all over are more willing to go downtown than to Iroquois. I would, because, you know, Hoffbrauhaus.

It probably would be a hard sell on days when no events are taking place nearby. Over yonder in Germany, some pretty big beer halls and beer gardens can be found in out of the way places, relatively speaking, but (a) there usually are numerous public transportation and biking options, and (b) the very concept of making a day of it in the old-fashioned sense survives. As noted above, the Hofbrauhaus-Newport location does a healthy tourist trade and is situated to draw it.

I love the idea, and think the very same thing every time we go up to Mt. St. Francis to walk. It could be the finest beer resort ever seen. Only the church and about $50 million stand in the way ...

Where is Mt St Francis? How long a walk?

Take I-64 west, cross the river, and after traveling through "the cut" there is a Highway 150 exit on the right. It's about five miles further up 150 on the left. Mt St Francis currently is a retreat center, formerly a monastery. There are walking trails and paths, and probably still a couple hundred acres of woods. It is a fine place for a walk on a nice day, except there's no beer :( ... yet. Someday, and $50 million ...
