My Fries were upcharged

by Bill P » Fri May 06, 2011 12:31 pm

So, we go to lunch the other day and the menu clearly states that all sammies are served with Slaw and fries. So we place our order and the server asks if we want the homemade fries or the "XYZ" fries with that? I order the homemade and NJ orders the "XYZs" . The bill arrives and there is a two buck up charge for the "XYZ" fries. No mention or hint of the additional charge at time of order nor any indication of it on the relatively short lunch menu.
OK, in the scheme of things this ain't a big deal, but I find this practice of undisclosed up charges annoying and deceitful. I have no problems with up charges, but would like some attempt at disclosure.

FWIW, this was not a new hire.

It's wrong, but it could probably have been resolved with a simple, courteous question on your way out.

Please share with us where this occurred so we aren't also surprised.

Me courteous?
You're right of course, but we were in a hurry for an appointment and I presented my credit card immediately to the server, so I was partially at fault for not paying closer attention and wasn't about to fuss when I was somewhat culpable. The point of my post was to see how others felt about this type of practice.

Mark-
See my response to Robin above. I feel somewhat culpable and thus won't "out" them, since I did not address this directly with the establishment..

It seems to be fairly common practice to not mention the up charge. I guess the best practice as a consumer is to always ask...though I'll admit I very rarely do.

I'd hope those fries were loaded with all kinds of tasty stuff for a $2 up charge and not just some uninspired spice mix. (RedRobin)

Nope. The XYZ fries were fairly pedestrian and IMO a notch or two below the superb homemade fries I ordered. Go Figger!

That being said, I'd wager it was a programming or order entry error. Please settle my curiosity and call them to find out! Or send me a PM with the details and I'll do it :-).

Once again, we Northerners get the shaft. I know: you can't hide the "accent."
