? about Rolled Oysters at Homerun Burger

I am not much of an oyster fan, but my dad and brothers dearly love rolled oysters. Dad is going to be in town this weekend, and my brothers, myself, and my boys are planning on taking him for a guys lunch. My first thought was to take him to Homerun Burger. They can get rolled oysters and my sons will enjoy burgers and dogs.

I seem to recall that oysters had a "season" years ago and where not available year round at Mazzonis and Moores. Is that still the case? or are the Rolled oysters available year round?

Glad you thought of us and yes, we will have Rolled Oysters this weekend. There was a tremendous response to our Rolled Oysters - thanks in part to Robin's review in the LEO - when we introduced them for the Lenten season. We would love to be the "go-to" place for Rolled Oysters but have to be sure that the demand is there year-round. So, for now, I don't know if they will be on the menu all the time. Maybe we will bring in a gallon for the weekend and when we run out, we will be out until the next weekend? My father will look at how much movement we get this weekend now that Lent is over and decide what to do. I'll post an answer next week about it.

They used to say that oysters were only available during the months with an "R" in the name of the month - September through April - when the ocean waters are colder producing plumper, sweeter oysters. And probably before refrigerated trucks that can now provide fresh, good-quality oysters year-round. Although, the price does tend to be higher in the summer months.

Kathy I have a question about your oysters...How many oysters do you generally put in each rolled oyster?..I ask this because we were at your store on Shelbyville Rd back I guess in March and I got a rolled oyster and I was lucky if mine had one and a half oysters in it. This may have been a fluke or may be how they were supposed to be but it was pretty much 80 percent or more breading. It was hard enough to get crackers from the kids behind the counter so I didnt bother asking them. Thanks for your input.

You are pretty close on that estimate, Bev. Rolled Oysters remind me of a stuffing or a dressing with oysters (instead of turkey!) When the Rolled Oysters are fried, the oysters inside the ball of cracker crumb batter are steamed so that the breading is infused with the taste of fresh oysters. This fried dough is the only part that some of our customers eat: they nibble AROUND the oysters!

I can recommend a local place that serves awesome Pan Fired Oysters: the Hungry Pelican in Fern Creek and also in Clarksville. Be sure to ask for their homemande "Special" Sauce that goes great with them.

I know my oysters and yes I was disappointed to compare these to Mazzoni's is an illusion. I have eaten Mazzoni's when they were on 7th street and when they were on Taylorsville Rd. I know the difference between rolled oysters and pan fried . I remember Mazzoni's having at least 4 oysters per roll. Your oyster did not cover the center of the palm of my hand, maybe 2 inches in diameter. I dont think I will be needing to go to any other of your busnesses in the future to be educated.

I am sorry if I was mistaken but I know they used to own the one on St Rita in Okalona,as I was a frequent customer.

I've had the rolled oysters at Home Run Burgers on a couple of occasions - I had them at the St. Matthews location. I think there were 3-4 oysters in mine - it was as close to Mazzoni's as I've ever had. I loved them. If I'm not mistaken Kathy's family does own Home Run Burgers.

Well I guess I was meaning it to be snippy...I didn't like my oysters I addressed it to the person as a question here since I could not address it in the store. I have seen a lot worse comments on here by other people, I thought I was allowed to vent my dissatisfation.
