Restaurant fund-raisers/donations for tornado victims?

by Robin Garr » Fri Apr 29, 2011 10:38 am

I'm getting Emails from people who'd love to support restaurant-based tornado relief efforts. Is anybody doing it? If so, please post here. Maybe we can get some win-win efforts started wherin we can eat well and lend a hand.

Selena's to host a fund-raisers/donations for tornado victim

by Chris G » Sat Apr 30, 2011 11:46 pm

Selena's at Willow Lake Tavern is planning on hosting an event possibly Tuesday May 10th to benefit the tornado victims. Ten percent of the night's sales or twenty percent if you mention this post will be donated to The University of Alabama Acts of Kindness Fund which provides financial assistance to employees and students of the university affected by the tornadoes.

Working on possibilty of live entertainment from local Alabama alum. Further details to follow as nothing is set in stone at this time.

My daughter is a second year student at the University of Alabama and will be in town for the benefit along with other UA students. Luckily she was on the outer edge of the effected area and is safe and sound. The devistation she describes is heart breaking. She is staying in Tuscaloosa to assist with the clean up effort but will be back in Louisville by the end of this week.

The students will also be collecting donations for the Acts of Kindness Fund in addition to the monies donated by Selena's. Bring your checkbooks to help with this very worthy cause.

Robin thanks for posting this on the forum and hopefully others will step up.

The O'Shea's group is so supportive of local community needs and their generosity obviously extends to other areas of the country. They are very subtle about their efforts and I think often get overlooked--let's support them! Do note the days they are closing so the staff can go to Alabama to help with the tornado victims.

THE O’SHEA’S FAMILY OF PUBS HEADS TO ALABAMA TO AID VICTIMS OF APRIL 27th TORNADOES

The O’Shea’s Family of Pubs will be boarding buses and heading to Marshall County, Alabama where they will join the Christian Appalachian Project Disaster Relief (CAP) team already there helping rebuild after the shocking round of tornadoes that ripped through the southeast on April 27th.

These storms made a path from Alabama to South Carolina. In the aftermath, more than 250 lives were lost in seven states. 194 lives were taken in Alabama alone, the deadliest day from weather in the state’s history. Homes were completely destroyed, and people’s lives torn apart and strewn across the countryside. On top of this devastation, 15 inches of rain has fallen in a matter of five days causing flooding in parts of the region, which is creating a whole new layer to this disaster. The O’Shea’s Family of Pubs will join CAP in making every effort to make a difference in the wake of this disaster. The volunteer Disaster Relief team will be working on the ground cleaning up debris and helping provide hope and support to the people affected most.

Members of the public are welcome to join us as we head out on another journey to help those in need. We will be departing the evening of Sunday, May 8th from O’Shea’s Pub at 956 Baxter Avenue in the Highlands. The buses will be leaving Alabama to return to Louisville the evening of Tuesday, May 10th. To sign up please contact Amanda Kuo at amanda@osheaslouisville.com no later than noon on Thursday, May 5th so we can confirm the number of people to be transported.
To allow more staff members to attend, O’Shea’s Pub and Flanagan’s Ale House on Baxter Avenue as well as Brendan O’Shea’s on Shelbyville Road will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, May 9th – 10th.

They are also collecting clothing and toiletry donations to bring down with them. These can be dropped off at O'Shea's or Zanzabar by Derby Eve. (Friday PM)
