You think it's funny, but it's only a matter of time.

If I'm not mistaken, there is already one Mc D's in Louisville that's 24 hours. As for other places and modernization...White Castle has Online Ordering??

Actually the one on Hurstbourne at I-64 and the one on Blankenbaker on the J-town side of I-64 both are.

8 or 9 years ago, the McDonald's in Abilene, KANSAS was open 24 hours a day! We found that shocking back then; now, not so much. Seems to be more the norm than the exception. 'Course, in Abilene, they literally roll up the streets and turn off the lights about 8:30 P.M., so the McD's being open after dark is a big treat!

"The company, based in Oak Brook, Ill., says it is making a concerted effort to add staff as its business improves and as more of its restaurants stay open 24 hours a day."

Many McDonald's already are 24 hours. The article in no way insinuates that all are going 24 hours or that there is a company mandate to do so. Nothing to see here other than an ongoing change in the market that has been shifting for some time now.

I grew up in Maysville Ky. It was big news when one of the grocery stores in town started opening on Sunday's. That was in the early 70's. Most of the downtown stores closed on Wednesdays. Never could quite fiqure that one. I was told it was because they were open on Saturday and it gave employees 2 days off a week.

Several McDonald's went 24 hours about 8-10 years ago if I recall. Most of them went back to closing around 12, except for 3 I believe. I'm all for it since I work 3rd shift and enjoy their coffee.

I'm all for places at least being open later if not 24 hours. I loved that in Toronto and NYC.

Yeah but if chains stay open later, some independents will follow suit.

they will?
because they want to copy the business model set by McDonald's?

Because they will see the business that is there. Some businesses sit back and let others take the gamble first and let's face it, McDonald's can afford to take that gamble. Yes there are a handful of locals here already open late some nights, but not many.

By and large, I think they make the sound business decision of going where the people are. Check out the nightspot zones - Baxter and St. Matthews in particular - and you'll find plenty of places staying open until very late. Okay, it's mostly pizza, burritos, salty-fatty stuff that people want after a hard night of drinking. But I'm pretty sure that if you find a neighborhood where a critical mass of people stay out late, you'll find entrepreneurs ready to provide for their needs. :)

ok, thats fair, i think i just got a little feather-ruffled because 'I' mistook what you were saying for my own mental picture of a local, independant/McD's hybrid.thats on me.
now having said that, ive actually kicked around the concept, for a few years, of a 10p-6a, upscale/casual, clean/fesh food cafe with reasonable pricing that would act as an alternative to every other late night 'food store' out there.
