One of the problems that adds fuel to the copper theft problem is the scrapyards that buy these stolen items no questions asked. If a licensed HVAC company sells old units for scrap thats one thing, but a guy off the street shows up with a commercial AC or fridge compressor, that shoulld raise some red flags. There should be some sort of ID required of the seller and some photos of the items sold should be in some type of file.

I would hope DTC would have insurance to cover the value of goods lost to the lack of refrigeration and also damage to the compressor, assuming the organization owned it. Insurance does not negate the impact of the crime, but does make it a lot easier to deal with financially..

This is actually a requirement for scrap sales in metro Louisville but even that doesn't seem to slow down the crimes.

Did they name the scrap yard? Any charges filed against management for receiving stolen property?

Charges won't be filed against the River Metals company because the scrap yard didn't do anything wrong.

That's because drivers don't have to show titles to sell cars for recycling.

Don't blame the scrapyard. They did nothing wrong. If you'd like to see change, then contact an appropriate congressman.

It certainly doesn't sound like they behaved ethically at all. you would think they would at least want some kind of proof of ownership for the vehicle for their own protection even if it wasn't a legal requirement. Without that you would think they could be charged with receiving stolen goods and destroying private property since they had no claim to the ownership of the vehicle.

I never said anything about ethical. If people want to wag their fingers and shake heads at the company for accepting these cars, then fine. They did so, however , not violating legal law.

Depending on the value of the property received, receiving-stolen-property is either a misdemeanor or a felony.

I thought they got a copper refridgeration coil not a car - how would you prove you owned that?

How much due diligence do you expect a scrap yard to be responsible for? I would expect they should require a title for a car - otherwise with untitled material it would be crazy.

receiving-stolen-property is either a misdemeanor or a felony.

Only if the persons knew at the time said property was in fact stolen. If they later found out property was stolen (receiving party) and attempted to conceal it, then they may be guilty of possession of stolen goods. Depending on the jurisdiction.

As for the car-title issue, it's not limited to KY. There does need to be some type of ownership proof in order for this type of thing not to occur in the future. I agree. On occasion, a junked car will not have a title because it has been lost. I'm at odds as to what other type of identification other than cross checking a person's ID with license's plates of a junked car. Or the Vin number.

To bring this thread back around, I hope Dare to Care is able to recover from this unfortunate occurrence. Our office was the target of copper thieves several months ago and we lost an air-conditioner. Now we've got them in a more secure location. We hope.

I can tell you that they provided the St. Matthew's Food Pantry last Saturday with a full range of product, including veggies (bagged potatoes and carrots) and frozen meat, so they're clearly operational.
