DEADLINE NEARS FOR DERBY PIE PHOTO CONTEST

Louisville, KY – The deadline for submitting photographs for the "Smile with Derby Pie" photo contest, hosted by Kern's Kitchen, Inc., the exclusive baker of Derby Pie chocolate nut pie, is September 30, 2007. The company is asking the public to submit photos of themselves with Derby Pie to be showcased in an online web gallery and the most interesting ones will be showcased in a 2008 calendar. Individuals submitting a photo chosen for the calendar will also receive a free Derby Pie.

"We know that Derby Pie is recognized as a Kentucky tradition," says Alan Rupp, President and Owner of Kern's Kitchen, Inc. "This is our way of showcasing the classic chocolate nut pie and having a little fun while doing it."

Entry forms and rules for the photo contest are available at http://www.derbypie.com/smile . There is no entry fee, and the photographs should include a Derby Pie, either in the box or out of the box, and be creative.

The judging for calendar photos will take place this autumn, and the winners will be announced on http://www.derbypie.com .

To support the contest, A Taste of Kentucky is offering a $4 discount until September 30th on any Derby Pie purchased in store or online. Don't you mean:

DERBY-PIE ®

They go to a lot of trouble to protect that name. See:

I know, I covered the final wrapup of a gigantic federal case back in the '80s in which Kern's Kitchen went to remarkable lengths to protect their mark. The case file took up about eight running feet of bookshelf space!

Accordingly, I wouldn't consider putting a chocolate nut pie on a restaurant menu and calling it Derby-Pie®.

In food journalism, though, that's another story. "DERBY-PIE" is a made-up, non-standard English commercial name, and I'm not interested in perpetuating that in non-commercial use, any more than I'm inclined to call the Seelbach the Seelbach Hilton, the St. Matthews mall Mall St. Matthews, or the Triple Crown the Visa Triple Crown. Harrumph. ;)
