Ribs & expires 10/31/05

Who do you think has the best ribs in town?

Also, did anyone else notice that Saturday's Scene had an ad for Tony Roma's that expired on October 31, 2005.

Bourbon Bros. Barbecue comes close. And the guy who was smoking ribs on the Belvedere at WorldFest, who plans to open a bbq joint called Dee's Food Service on Poplar Level near Indian Trail in Newburg this month ...

Hey, we're talking about Gannett here ...

Did the guy from Dee's say if there is actually supposed to be a restaurant as part of their business? I got the impression from the WorldFest thread notes that it was going to be just catering.

There was a younger woman with Mr. Beecham on Friday, and she did most of the talking. But I asked, "Do you have a restaurant," and she said, "Not yet, but we will in a few weeks," and an extended conversation followed in which she gave the address and certainly left me the impression that the public could go in and dine. I think she said Sept. 10 or 12 was the opening date, but you know how that goes ...

Certainly. Thanks for the info, it's one we're going to be watching for.

Any idea on where the restaurant is going to be?

If you read back up the thread, you'll see it ... 4900 block of Poplar Level near Indian Trail.

Again, we seem to have heard competing stories at the WorldFest booth, so while I hope I got it right that Dee's is going to be open to the public and not just catering, only time will tell ...

The WORST ribs I ever had were at Tumbleweed. I live near a Tumbleweed and decided to take them up on the ribs' deal one night. Major mistake. Actually, they tasted like boiled pork which got browned and some sauce on at the end. They were truly gross.

Yeah, sounds about right. My general rule of thumb: if I don't see the smoke, I don't eat the ribs.

(of course that's a little simplistic but it's the general idea - as many times as I've driven by or gone to a Tumbleweed I've never seen any evidence of smoking so no ribs for me).

Honestly, that is my rule as well. If a restaurant has ribs on their menu or advertised outside, I look and smell for a smoker. No smoke, we keep drivin... I'm an admitted que snob.

Having said that, I have not been so adventurous on what was once my que quest to find the best bbq in town (an expensive curiosity for a recent college grad). But my current favs are Jucy's and Bourbon Bros, but I haven't tried Bourbon Bros since they moved. Used to love Vince Staton's, but haven't been there in at least 5 years, and heard the quality has declined, unfortunately, but can't personally comment. Also, that place in Lyndon that moved out to Middletown, then closed???? Pepper????something??? Oh man, I loved them. I've seen comments here that the same guy is back with his recipes at Frankfort Beer Depot. I think that's what it's called, next to Pat's. We need to try them. Sorry for all the brain lapses, but hope it helps....

I had ribs for lunch at Jucy's this week and they are still tender and delicious. They meet the smoke rule. They serve their ribs dry (Texas Style). I don't like their sauce so much, but everyone has an opinion when it comes to sauce. Their ribs are worth the drive.
