Porter would be my first choice with oatmeal stout a close second. A good nut brown ale in a pinch. It really depends on what is in the whole course.

Belgian Dubble is a great choice too. Personally, I'd stay away from anything too hoppy or bitter. SNPA would be my upper limit hop wise.

<Huge Painful Sigh>....I'm longing for the days when it when beer wasn't so "uppity" and the words "beer" and "pairing" never appeared in the same sentence. God God man, just crack a freaking cold one of YOUR choice, belly up to that big ol' hunk of red meat and to hell with "pairing" <insert raised pinky finger>.

On second thought, I recommend a good Dogfish Head Belgian Trappist Maple Chipotle -Bourbon Barrel Lambic Dopple Porter.....Provided the grains have been roasted over Lilac wood and cracked between the (stunning) breasts of blonde Czechoslovakian virgins.

Funny thing, I don't eat steaks very often but we had a couple of special occasions over the last week. As a result I had the N.Y. strip at Rivue and again at Gary's on Spring, both quite good. At Rivue I started with a shot of 18-year-old Elijah Craig and with the steak had BBC amber. At Gary's I had a shot of Booker's and with the steak had Shlafly's pale ale. For me the pale ale worked much better with the food.

Any good beer store. I've also bought at Whole Foods. We have an excellent version of Rauch bier, Smoked Abzug, brewed by Jared Williamson in the NABC R & D brewery. Smoked Abzug is not over the top smoky like the Schenkerla. It is on tap at both our locations.

The days when...
This is nothing new. I've been pairing beer with food and cooking with beer since I started brewing my own in 1980 as have most of my friends. Beer pairing does not require pinky raising or shoes for that matter. You are required to swallow.

I prefer over-the-top smoky, but truth be told, I've been keeping it pretty adolescent with beer lately. I shudder to admit that I've been drinking half woodchuck half harp a lot lately (snakebite?). It's like a soda pop! But you know, Dave, that I lurve smoky beer.

As for the original post, BBC Porter is such an accessible and perfect pairing for steak. And cheap, too. 7.99 for a sixer of local good beer is a strong selling point for me. And I bought a variety 12 pack recently at Valu Mkt with 4 different choices - Alt, APA, Nut Brown, and Porter for 15 bucks.

That said, NABC is the better choice for sure. Just not as cheap and easy.
