Singing the praises of Wiltshire on Market

by Melissa Richards-Person » Fri Apr 08, 2011 11:40 am

A group of 6 of us had dinner at Wiltshire on Market yesterday, and all I can say is WOW! It had been a year since I'd been, and I found myself wondering why we hadn't been back sooner. Food was wonderful, service was warm, friendly and unobtrusive, overall, just a great, great time. Since you can still have this menu today and tomorrow, I'll give you the highlights:

- I was the first to arrive, and was starving due to a less-than-stellar lunch. So, I got the marinated olives as a nibble. A nicely overflowing bowl of a variety of green, black & (I think) kalamata olives with citrus and some spice. Perfect to take the edge off!

- As you all may know, Wiltshire on Market changes the menu weekly, so it's, by design, small-ish, but we didn't have any trouble at all making decisions. There were 3 salads on the menu, but all of us salad-eaters went with the red-veined sorrel salad, served with a cherry balsamic vinaigrette and a small wedge of brie. Good salad, although if there was any mark on the evening, it was that the kitchen was a bit-heavy handed with the dressing. A lighter touch on the dressing would have let the flavor of the sorrel come through a bit more.

- the others had the soup - a sweet potato and coconut milk soup that smelled divine. (I wouldn't know how it tasted, because they wouldn't let any of us near it!) It produced raves from the two at the table who ordered.

- There were 4 dinner selections, and I guess none of us were in a "fish" mood, because no one ordered the Florida Flounder (although it sounded quite nice). Three of us, myself included, ordered a rustic lasagna, with arugula, kale, housemade ricotta, housemade marinara and mozzerella cheese. It was served with a salad of parsley and cilantro tossed in a little bit of citrus and olive oil. Fantastic! I didn't miss the meat at all, because the flavors of the arugula and kale made each bite really savory with a little peppery edge. The dish even drew raves from the Italian at the table who makes her own marinara from her grandmother's recipe -high praise! The other choices at our table were a lamb loin which was rich and buttery and cooked perfectly, (and BTW, made a nice pairing with the bottle of Four Graces Pinot Gris we were splitting as a table), and a Trio of Pork, which I know included Pork Belly and tenderloin, but I was too focused on my lasagna to pay attention to what else was going on there :-)

- I also have to give a "shout out" to one of the dessert options - a plate of "little cookies" at $6, which featured 9 miniature cookies - chocolate dipped chocolate cookies, butterscotch bars and almond butter rings tossed in powdered sugar - that was really a great, great option to just finish with a little "something sweet."

All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience!

It's currently in my top 3 local places - always great to see the the weeks menu will bring. In my experience you virtually have to have a reservation to get in at a decent hour.
