St. Paddy's Day

by Benaiah C » Tue Mar 13, 2007 1:21 pm

For some insane reason I am leaving one of the most Irish cities in America (Chicago) to spend St. Paddy's Day in bluegrass country! I have my own selfish reasons for doing so, but now I am wondering where the best place to drink away St. Paddy's Day is? I am pretty familiar with the area, and I have been to all the big Irish bars (Molly Mallones ect), but I am wondering if there is anything especially cool to do that day?

Malone's has a good celebration, and so does the Irish Rover on Frankfort, where they usually put up a big tent and pretty much take over the neighborhood. I'm sure just about any local pub with an Irish name will be a'wearin' of the green on Saturday, though.

I would concentrate on the 2 main areas: 1) Irish Rover and 2)Baxter with Molly Malones, O'shea's and Flanigan's. Both areas will be in full swing. I would also recommend timing your visits to be able to hear a great Louisville group that is perfect for St.P's: Cloigheann ("Cloggin"). They are playing as follows:

March 17 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
Irish Rover
March 17 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm
Molly Malone's
March 17 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Irish Rover

Enjoy...I will be in Richmond, VA

Patrick's

Patrick's is always a good time. Don't overlook this Frankfort Ave. staple. Seldom mentioned, this place will be HOPPING ON ST.PADDY'S DAY. The Beer-Garten out the back should be an interesting place to be in the Wee Wee Hours.

Sweet Peas on Frankfort Avenue is celebrating St. Patrick's Day all week with some specials like corned beef & cabbage, fish & chips and guiness pie. It is right down from the Irish Rover at 2350 Frankfort Ave. :D

by Caroline K » Thu Mar 15, 2007 10:23 am

The Vernon is certainly something different to do for St. Pat's-we are serving $1 Green Beer and $1 Fish Sandwiches and $2.50 Bowling all day starting @ Noon! :D

green beer

by amy lyons » Thu Mar 15, 2007 12:52 pm

Please do not push the 'green beer' for St. Paddy's day theme. Green beer is not Irish- no self-respecting pub would allow it on the premises. It is an affront to the Irish and beer alike. imho

Plus, The Vernon is NOT a respectful pub but a wonderful little gem of a bowling alley in the Butchertown area which happens to have a bar serving PBR!

green beer

I know that the Vernon is a bowling alley. I was just commenting on the whole green beer idea - to pull a quote from the Bar Belle in LEO

'...a pint of syrupy green sludge that leaves stains all over your face. It looks like you just blew a leprechaun...'

Just a contrarian, I reckon.

I thought I'd try something different, and have good beer on St. Paddy's Day.

Especially cool to do on St. Patrick's Day weekend: Have dinner at L&N, topped off with my house-made Guinness Stout ice cream and oatmeal cookie biscotti.

Now THAT'S cool.

Hey Roger- Danny just hooked up our guinness tap yesterday, (nitrogen and all) so if you want a frosty(or warm) mug, stop on in.

Hmmm ...

Good to hear, Dave.

And the L & N, homemade float idea sounds pretty darned yummy. That's an acceptable way to deploy beer with food, as opposed to coloring it green. Could just drop some broccoli in it - like limes on a corn-fed Corona.
