As someone new to the forum making a first time post, I am happy to be commenting on a thread where I may have some insight. Currently there are 13 replies, and 440 views to this post about a little restaurant that lies off the beaten track even for Bowling Green. Pretty neat.
“ ...review takes off the gloves” as Robin poignantly noted was a bold move for a small town paper. Usually reviews from the Bowling Green Daily News find little to criticize. Perhaps that is one reason why I have been drawn to Louisville Hot Bytes.
As Ruth Reichel noted when she was a NY Times restaurant critic- “You cannot have credibility unless you’re occasionally tough.” Lacking competition in the local publishing arena, and running on a small budget certainly doesn’t bode well for great restaurant reviewing. Still, the small daily newspaper provides a decent service.
Regarding the Chinese buffet operation in question- I say they were busted. However, as any citizen in their right mind should know, a Chinese or any other buffet for that matter is probably not at their best in off hours. Furthermore, most authoritative reviewers usually have the opportunity to visit a restaurant 2-3 times before publishing a review. At any rate the term ‘homespun’ accurate and wincing at the same time does well not to poke fun at the little daily lacking big city resources.
The true equalizer in reviewing of any sort is forums such as this. Giving many people the opportunity to weigh in on subject matter near and dear to their hearts provides a good picture as to the quality of the subject matter. Perhaps the case of the local Chinese buffet is that picture has already been drawn. As most foodies will probably agree few buffets rank at or near the top of of favorite places to eat not just in Bowling Green, but anywhere.
At any rate, I’m truly thrilled to find such a forum filled with people passionate about food, and restaurants. Kudos to all and keep up the good posting!
