Verbena Cafe

by Gayle DeM » Fri Mar 25, 2011 2:44 pm

Finally, made it to Verbena Cafe for lunch. Wonderful! I opted for "lunch" while my friends went with brunch items.

My choice was an old-fashioned patty-melt, which for me is my all-time favorite order-out comfort food. It hit the spot. Haven't had a really good one in years, since the grill was removed from Walgreen's in Turfland Mall in Lexington.

In my mind Verbena Cafe tops Wild Eggs but with more exstensive menu listings, more atmosphere and more serenity. It is definitely moving to my "A" list.

Then to top it all off, I was able to stop by Gilberto Gelato and pick up a pint of Coffee Chocolate (?Chocolate Coffee?) gelato. IMH so much better than Comfy Cow IC. It's a textural thing with me.

All that put me in food heaven.

Couldn't agree with your opinion more! It certainly has become one of our favorites although I haven't gotten past the brunch menu items to try any of the lunch menu items. Patty melts are definitely one of my favorites so I may have to try when the next time we go.

Is the patty melt the thin type (probably like Walgreen's) or thick? My current favorite is that from Austin's - 8 oz patty, done how you order it, grilled onions, cheese top & bottom, and on a good rye dripping in juices & butter from the grill. It likely has enough fat and cholesterol for a month, but it taste's great!

I really don't like the thin, well done type of patty melt, but if you can order it done rare-ish I'm off to the Commons!

Agree with the OP in every way. Great place without the Wild Eggs wait.

Everything I have had at Verbena's has been superb. Been there three times and absolutely love the food. Service has always been great and I love the atmosphere.

We finally ate at Verbena's, first time, on Sat. We opted for , of course. Two more meals! Very good. Everything was done alittle differently and alittle better than most places. The potato pancakes were really good; just enough potato taste. Their potatoes were across between homemade hashbrowns and freezer version. Best I've had.
Nice service. Very pleasant atmosphere. Everyone pitched in. People were keeping the place clean.
One oddity - did not pay the server. Paid at the front of the restaurant/hostess area.
Looking forward to trying their monte cristo. My girls loved the one at Langtrys and are always looking for something similar - we don't deep fry at home.
The early closing each day will keep us from going as often as we might, but we'll be back. We love walking at Norton's Commons, so I can't wait until the weather changes and we can get food to go after our walk from there and the other food establishments.
