PR: The Wiyos coming to the Rud (Sept. 19)

by Robin Garr » Thu Aug 30, 2007 11:54 am

This looks like a wacky kind of fun!

For Immediate Release:

what: THE WIYOS present a live musical performance
where: The Rudyard Kipling - Louisville, KY
when: Wednesday, September 19; 7pm
why:
vaudevillian-ragtime-jugband-blues-and-hillbilly-swing!!!!
with: Tim Krekel & Mad Tea Party

WASHBOARD SWING! SILENT FILM COMEDY! RAGTIME GUITAR!
CLOWNING! SLAP UPRIGHT BASS! VAUDEVILLIAN ANTICS! FUN!

The Wiyos play a singular style of old-timey American
music that they call "vaudevillian
ragtime-jugband-blues and hillbilly swing." An
acoustic trio comprised of three vocals, washboard,
harmonica, kazoo, archtop/resonator
guitar/banjo-guitar/banjo-ukulele, and upright bass,
The Wiyos transport listeners back to a time before TV
and mass media were the main sources of entertainment;
to the days when acoustic, handmade music could be
heard on live radio and at community dances, medicine
shows and house parties. Incorporating elements of
physical comedy and theatricality, The Wiyos create a
visually stimulating show in the spirit of Fats
Waller, The Skillet Lickers, Spike Jones and the
Hoosier Hotshots.

Based in New York City, The Wiyos have spent the last
five years touring relentlessly, and as a result have
become one of the most recognized and acclaimed
old-timey acoustic bands on the east coast. They have
been featured at many venerable festivals and
listening rooms including The Newport Folk Festival
(2004-05), The Piccolo Spoleto Festival (2005-6), The
Kennedy Center Arts Festival (2007), The Lincoln
Center Out-Of-Doors Festival (2006) and The Carnegie
Hall Neighborhood Concert Series (2003-07). They have
also toured throughout Canada, The UK, The
Netherlands, France and Sweden.

The Wiyos will be touring in support of their
self-titled third record “The Wiyos” which is mainly
comprised of original songs inspired by the old-time
stringbands, blues singers, jugbands and hot jazz
ensembles of the 1920's & 30's; as well as the method
of recording that was prevalent in the early period of
documented American music. The songs on "The Wiyos"
were recorded live with no overdubs to analog
two-track in three days. All dynamics were created by
adjusting individual positions in relation to the two
microphones; no digital editing or mixing occured
during post-production. For more in formation please

We saw the Wiyos play at Floyd Fest this year. They were very entertaining and talented, rotating instruments between and even during songs. I highly recommend seeing this show!

The Chocolate Drops were awesome, even though their show on the main stage was cut short by rain. This was our second time at Floyd, and we will return every year (sorry Forecastle, you'll have to move your dates). Floyd has introduced us to some utterly incredible musicians including Xavier Rudd, Toubab Krewe, and this year DeVotchKa was insanely good. The vibe at Floyd is unbeatable. And for a festival, the food and beer are top notch too! And if you ever go, don't pass up the opportunity to eat at Oddfellows Cafe in downtown Floyd. Their Chile Rellenos are possibly the best I've ever had.

Sweet! I would love to go sometime.

My brother went to school with a few of the guys in Toubab Krewe - they have blown up HUGE this summer.

The Carolina Chocolate Drops are coming back to the Jug Band Jubilee in October! You should definitely try to make it :)
