Hawaiian Shaved Ice?

by Madi D » Wed Mar 09, 2011 11:20 pm

As warmer months approach, my thoughts always drift to one of my favorite summer treats; Hawaiian Shaved Ice. Ever since the actual "Hawaiian Shaved Ice" shop on Bardstown Road and Speed closed many years ago i've found it increasingly hard to find this delicacy. I'm not talking about snow cones. Those are usually dense and frozen over and not even close to the magical Hawaiian Shaved Ice in all it's fluffy icee glory.
When i was a kid we would have block parties every summer and one year, I dont know how, there was a Hawaiian Shaved Ice cart set up for FREE. Just imagine! Unlimited shaved ice for a neighborhood of kids. I loved that day. I guess there is something to be said for getting 'em while they're young and brand loyalty because i've craved shaved ice in the summer ever since.

Anyone know where to find it? Summer options are suitable but year round would be great!
Thanks,
Madi

There used to be one in the parking lot near the Dupont tennis club. (The parking lot of the movie theater) I'll notice the next time I'm in that area.

I do Hawaiian shaved ice at A.J.'s. We have around 25 flavors. As soon as I get enough empty tzatziki containers to freeze the water we will start. Probably within the next two weeks.

In 1996 there was one of these in every parking lot.

I am kind of a big deal.

There is still a shaved ice place out here in the front of my neighborhood in Bullitt County but even during the hottest days of summer the past couple of years, the opening times have been, shall we say somewhat unpredictable.

It's actually Shave Ice (not shaved).

Hawaiians are pretty particular about that :)

Yep, just like Jamaicans hate it when people talk about "jerked" pork.
