Pet friendly restaurants

by Sara R » Tue Mar 08, 2011 10:52 am

I tried searching the forum and couldn't find a topic addressing this, but I apologize if this has already been discussed. I moved here a few months ago and now that spring is on its way, I wanted to see what pet friendly restaurant options there were. I searched dogfriendly.com and bringfido.com but all I really saw were places like Sonic drive-ins. Is there an ordinance prohibiting pets on restaurant patios? Or are there other pet friendly places in town that just aren't listed?

I grew accustomed to bringing my (professionally trained!) dog with me all the time in Texas.

I see dogs on most of the Bardstown/Baxter restaurant sidewalks all the time.

It's my understanding that the Health Department forbids dogs (except service dogs) inside restaurants. As far as I know, most places with sidewalk dining don't mind if your dog is with you. Enclosed patios, it's probably up to the management. It really would be nice to compile a list ... perhaps this discussion will start one?

I know that Heine Bros. on Frankfort used to let people bring well-behaved dogs in, but that stopped a year or two ago with prominently posted signs indicating that the health inspector had ordered an end to it. They do provide a water bowl out front, though, and people frequently enjoy the al fresco Frankfort Avenue life with their pets there. Just one example ...

I'm sorry but the only pet friendly restaurant should be your home. I understand people love their pets but there's a fine line people. Not only can SOME people not control their pets but there are people with allergies, plus some people's pets shed uncontrollably and a restaurant cant reasonably account for that on top of their other cleaning duties. And speaking of cleaning duties related this, well I think we all know what else that could entail.

Substitute "children" for "pets," and we have the makings of a contentious debate here.

We had a guy that would bring his dog and sit on the porch. Then the guy would walk the dog to the flower beds out front and let him do his business. Right in front of the tables. I asked him not to bring back the dog. There is indeed a line.

Thank heavens for the health department. I don't care how well behaved the pet is, it is not hygienic. What if someone wanted to bring their monkey to a "pet friendly" restaurant? Ewwwww.

I always joke about taking my service pet chinchillas into target with me :)

I don't care about any monkeys, as long as I'm allowed to bring my pet tarantula ... 8)

Interesting thread - frankly many if not most dogs are more hygenic and less a health threat than the diners that bring them. The worst your likely to catch from a dog is an allergy - when your neighbor sneezes on the salad bar or doesn't wash his hands before proceeding to the buffet you can really catch something - bad.

I think you have a point. However, I must point out that most humans don't urinate and defecate in public. And therein lies the rub.

no chance this will change any minds and no mind-changing intended. but as someone who is an animal lover (not just the med rare varieties) as well as a victim of someones ill-tempered yet 'obedient and well-trained' dog on the outdoor patio of a local establishment that allows pets, i FIRMLY believe that non-service pets have ZERO business in restaurants. people love their pets and they should. and ive had this conversation hundreds of times. but all it takes is 2 seconds of honest, considerate thought toward others to realize how impractical bringing a dog to a restaurant is. i dont smoke while you eat, but i get bitten by a dog in public for no reason. sounds legit, right?
