I wandered down to Coachlamp for their Mardi Gras buffet this evening.

Wasn't too crowded when I got there around five, but it was picking up by the time I finished and was leaving.

Loaded up on corn maque choux, which I had never had before and quite enjoyed, and bread pudding, which I've had before and love. Everything was damn good, but those two things jumped out and made me go back for more. Drank an abita amber with dinner, and a couple cups of coffee with the bread pudding.

We stopped in at lunch for their Mardi Gras buffet. This was our first time there and we wanted to sample their fare.

The corn maque choux and bread pudding was absolutely the best I've had outside of Louisiana. Perfectly seasoned, and the bread pudding was very light and juicy with a slight citrus hint.

We really enjoyed the meat pies -- a treat that we haven't found outside of Natchitoches (yeah, we've been there!).

The fried catfish was pretty good -- we appreciate catfish cut into the thin slices like they prepare (classic style from Pass Manchac, LA). Ours were a bit overcooked, however, and the breading was a bit heavy. Simple yellow cornmeal (maybe with a bit of corn flour) is all you need!

The shrimp creole was disappointing -- it was rather watery.

The jambalaya and gumbo were authentic - no carrots in THEIR gumbo!

We'll be back, with friends!
