Mid-priced establishments with excellent martinis?

by Leslie Stewart » Wed Mar 02, 2011 10:54 pm

My brother and I are looking for a place to take my mom for her birthday on Sunday the 20th, either for a late brunch or early dinner - she initially wanted the Bristol for brunch, but walks with a cane and can't really navigate the Highlands location, especially given the fact that she'd like a couple of birthday martinis. I'd appreciate some options - maybe North End Cafe? But I'm not limiting my own Keep Louisville Weird concerns to her choices. Her major concern seems to be more about the quality of the martinis (gin) than anything else! Any other moderately priced outlet recommendations are welcomed!

Have you considered the Bristol on Hurtbourne?

I'm not a martini drinker, but doesn't 60 West specialize in martinis?

you can litterally park in front of the place and walk maybe 10 ft.
easy navigation inside too. no steps all on one floor plan.

Good choice...their gorgonzola stuffed olives are an awesome foil for really good gin. This place gets overlooked quite a bit but they really do a nice job. They have solid food and a nice bar.

I second Robin, 60 West has great martinis. Just there Monday evening. Gin, Vodka, Rum, even Bourbon martinis. You can check out their menu online at 60westbistro.com to see if there would be anything your mom would like.

Between the 4 of us we had a Dirty, Ginger, Bloody Sunday and Bellini, all vodka and all excellent.

OH, and we were celebrating my birthday so our waitress brought us a complimentary "Sexual Chocolate" martini that was incredibly good!

Outside of Jack's Lounge, the best martini I've had in town is at Brix. I'm not sure of their Sunday hours and I'm pretty sure they don't have brunch.

Leslie - I assume you were asking about the good, old-fashioned gin martini, gin, whisper of vermouth, olives, up . . . Oh heaven in a glass. :D

Yes, Mom will be 78 this month her idea of a martini is DEFINITELY an old school gin martini with an extra olive or two. She'd probably enjoy a Dirty Martini but would be far too lady like to ever order one in public!

Bonefish usually does a good job with bar items. I've had both their "regular" martinis and their more exotic concoctions.

All good. As is the food.

Martini = Top shelf gin, a rumor that vermouth was in the area, and big ass olives - all well chilled!

Jack's Lounge...Bombay Sapphire, dry (no vermouth, or as Winston Churchill said.."let the vermouth wave from across the room") and olives..ice COLD! No such thing as a vodka, rum, chocolate, apple, pear or any other permutation of nonsensical ingredients "martini". :)

The Bartender at Martini's really knows his way around a good Martini and the prices are very reasonable. Chef Allen Hubbard (a thirteen year Vincenzo's veteran) really knows how to lay on the good Italian eats.

What Mark said....I mean a chocolate Martini  ...Gimme a break. It may be a good "cocktail" but it's not a Martini. Somewhere Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra are rolling over in their graves.
