Sparkling Red Wine

by Madeline Peters » Wed Mar 02, 2011 10:12 am

Has anyone tried a shiraz red wine made in Australia crafted as a champagne? I just came across a description of this wine in an online blog. It sounds delicious. Robin, you are the expert. Have you tried these wines?

Madeline, yeah, I've tried them. They can be pretty good ... you really do need to serve them well chilled. I've had some good ones from Whole Foods wine market, Old Town and others among the usual sources.

Here's one article summing up the subject:

Of course, for a pizzeria, it would be GREAT if you could get an artisanal Lambrusco (NOT Riunite or Cella), but they're generally tiny production, available around NYC but not more widely.

Thank you for the links. I will check out the reall Lambrusco. I still have memories of that Riunite lambrusco as a high school kid. We thought that was the good stuff as well as the liefrumilche. You know, the one with the nuns on the label!

We carry a couple of sparkling reds. I'm at home, and can't remember their names, but we have an Australian sparkling Shiraz, and a sparkling Malbec from Reginato Winery out of Argentina. There is also a sweeter red from Italy that we carry that is a lightly carbonated red malvasia by La Sera. Those are the only ones I can think of that we have. There used to be a couple others brought in by a group out of Australia called Grateful Palate, but they have gone into bankruptcy ( I believe for the 2nd time) and we cannot get anything from them currently.

Madeline, here's another review/article I wrote about a tiny production/artisan Lambrusco that's really distributed only around NYC. Not much use for Coals, but it might give you a little more info to work with:

Saetti, Vigneto 2009 Lambrusco Salamino di S.Croce

This is the only bottle they carry. Wow...I am committed to bringing something like this for our pizzas. At 2-Amy's pizzeria in Washington DC the customers raved about their "fizzy red wine" and that it was great with pizza. I have been on their site but I don't see it listed anywhere.

Which sparkling Shiraz do you carry? I will send you a message.

No, but I'd love to. Is it on the shelf? I'll try to get over there tomorrow.

Yes, it is on the shelf at the Whole Foods in St Matthews. We are trying it tonight with our pizza. I don't know if I have the palette to judge but we will give it a try.

I'm sure you'll do just fine, Madeline. Tasting wine doesn't require a special license, and if you can detect good pizza, I'm pretty sure you can detect good wine. :)

Sorry, I missed this post! The sparkling Shiraz we carry is called The Chook.
