Interesting selection ... reads pretty much like those ad-supported dining guides you see on racks in motels. I wonder who wrote the "reviews" ... somebody at MSN, or a local free-lancer? They almost remind me of the CJ's old reviewer.

That might have been it! Honestly, I can't quite put my finger on it. Something about the specific selection of restaurants and the overall tone. I hadn't picked up on the strongly boozy subtext, but now that you mention it ...
