The Fishery, St. Matthews - staying open

by Rob_DeLessio » Mon Feb 28, 2011 12:26 pm

The Fishery in St.Matthews has said that they are fielding a lot of questions regarding if they are closing or not. To be clear, they are staying open. They will not be closing either one of their locations.

Probably a matter of confusion because Stan's Fish Sandwich is closing.

I like The Fishery as well. Sorry to see Stan's call it a day.

Agreed on both counts. Lots of great fish sandwich places around our town, though. I'd add The Fish House/Cafe Beignet at Winter and Barret as more than worthy, plus Zaytun's/Sharom's, and I wouldn't even turn down Moby Dick's, which is a chain but a high-quality Louisville-only chain.

Ya'll are missing the best fish sammich in The Ville...of course you've got to go outside the Watterson to get it. The Lake Erie (Yellow) Perch sammich at The New Direction is dah bomb...Imported from Ohio the fish actually tastes like fish. Served on a nice soft roll, the way fish was meant to be served. 8)

Wash it down with an ice cold Rolling Rock (in a frosty mug) and we're talking heaven on a bun.

Steve, just curious...do you usually hit up New Directions during lunch or dinner?

I ask because I was in there around lunch time a few weeks ago, and the place was practically empty...it was dark dreary etc. Now I definitely do not need a maitre d and white-tableclothes, but the feel and the mood of the place was certainly a downer. It was during some very cold weather, so that might be an explanation. Also, that place is huge...room for Karaoke, cornhole, large bar, video games and more, so with just a few folks in there, it seemed very sparse / empty. Does that make sense?

With that said, the cheeseburger I ordered was quite good. It was cooked beyond medium as I requested, but it was tasty. I thought about the fish, but I recall you (and maybe Dan) hyping up the burger, so I went that direction (no pun intended). It was beyond an average burger, and I'd have it again. My compnay has an office on Collins Lane, so I might try the fish next time out there.

Double D,

No arguments from me on any of that. The place could definitely use some sprucing up...Then again maybe that's why I like it so much...it reminds my of those dark (and often a touch seedy) factory bars I grew up (in ?) back in northern Ohio. It's definitely "blue collar" to the max (with a touch of "billy" mixed in on occasion) and anyone expecting (or desiring) something more will be sadly disappointed. The lunch crowd is usually kinda thin...To some extent I believe it depends on what is happening at Ford (layoffs, overtime, etc). Usually when I'm in there for lunch (once or twice a month) it's the same 6 or 8 guys holding up the bar. The "dinner crowd"...or more accurately the "bar crowd"...who happen to eat while they are there is a bit more consistent but again it depends on what night of the week it is (i.e. pool league, cornhole tourney, etc). We avoid "Karaoke" night like it was the plague...NOT a pretty sight (sound). The menu went through a major shake up last fall when they added pizza to the menu (which I happen to think beats the hell out of many of the "popular" pies here in the Ville...but that's for another thread). Used to be, Kathy would put out a really nice "Blue Plate Special" for lunch every day...Nothing fancy, maybe roast pork, smashed taters, green beans...something like that. For an everyday price of 5 bucks, including soft drink, there wasn't a cheaper (or more filling) lunch in town. We get along well with Kathy and Mo (the owners) since we're all more or less from the same town in Ohio (They know people I used to work with and vice versa)...So we'll stop in ohhhhh 2 or 3 times a month, usually early in the evening and enjoy a fish sammich, a pizza or a burger (along with a pitcher of Rolling Rock). They get some fairly good bands in there on occasion...but we usually don't stick around for that, mainly we're there for a little "bar food".

Steve, I too like the feel of a good blue collar / workers spot. However on the day I tried New Directions, it felt dark and dreary. The food certainly shined. I will def give it another try and hope the place gets spruced up a bit / has a pulse next time I'm there.

Thanks man. DD
