Suggestions for Best Upscale Burger

by Joan J » Mon Feb 28, 2011 8:56 am

Dear Experts,
I am craving an upscale premium beef hamburger on a toasted brioche with grilled onions and perhaps some melted brie. I've read this description somewhere in the last year.... but where??? Also would like a cocktail and upscale casual ambience from a Louisville Independent restaurant. Where should I go?

I don't know about the brioche, but we've had good burgers recently at Dish on Market and BBC in St. Matthews.

Cocktails? Gotta be Majid's or 732 Social ...

Heard Jack Fry's burger is amazing for ten bucks. Haven't had it myself.

And two can get out for under $30.

Not to dismiss others but I understand Mojitos uses brioche bun.. Maybe not Brie, but their La Peral can be substituted.

I am not a huge burger guy myself, but I tried a piece of my father's at the Mayan Cafe on Saturday and it was delicious. I would say it is among the best I have had, but then again I typically don't order them for my self.

Eddie Merlot's bar menu also has some pretty tasty 'gourmet" burgers and a great cocktail list.

I am quite the burger girl. My favorite in town is Jack's lounge, but no brioche bun and no brie. Until the last time we went, I would have said Mojito ran a close second, but the last one seemed more chorizo and less beef. I didn't like it.

I second Jack Frye's - it's a fine burger, as does L&N and Bourbon's Bistro.

Two of the most expensive in town are Limestone and Z's - neither worth the money.

I could go on and on but won't. I will say, I've only had the brioche at Mojito and haven't noticed the brie anywhere (but that doesn't mean it's not out there),

Thanks for the suggestions so far. If I wanted to make this dream burger at home.... where would I buy a brioche bun? Bakery at Sullivan? Whole Foods?

I could probably get the awesome ground beef from Foxhollow's store and the brie from Lotsa Pasta...

Kentucky Bison Co. ground beef or Dreamcatcher Farm ground beef (available at Bardstown Road Farmers' Market or, while it remains open, Stan's Fish Sandwich) are worthy options, too.

That's going to be tougher. We usually get our bread at Blue Dog, sometimes at Lotsa Pasta, but I'm not sure who has brioche. Your idea of calling The Bakery is good. Possibly also ... I dunno, Whole Foods? Costco? I like brioche, but it's so rich, I don't treat myself to it often unless it's on something I want at a restaurant.

Anyone?

The Bakery at Sullivan does make brioche bread, but does not normally make it every day for sale out front - BUT! You could call an order in any day Monday-Friday and it will be ready for you the next morning as early as 6:30 AM. And I'm sure they will make it into buns for you!

Try Bourbon's Bistro - great "vertical" burger, about a foot tall, both fun and delicious!
