King cakes

by Richard S. » Sat Feb 26, 2011 7:15 pm

Does anyone know who's selling king cakes this week? I'm particularly looking for ones filled with cream cheese. We've gotten them from Heitzman's the past few years but we'd like to try one from somewhere else.

Plehn's definitely makes king cake during Carnival, complete with the plastic baby. A good friend who's from New Orleans loves to get them. She says, and I agree, that they're not quite up to the Louisiana original - more like a coffee cake with colors and bling - but it's good enough to get the job done.

Was at a "Mardi Gras" party this afternoon featuring King Cakes from Valu Market. I was told that the store does NOT bake them with the baby doll inside (it was on top, in the center) because of liability issues.

I was kind of disappointed with this "Mardi Gras" party. They had decorations, beads, etc. but the food was not what I expected. Assumed they'd at least fix up a pot of Jambalaya or Gumbo or something Creole. Nope! Veggies with ranch dip, cocktail weiners in BBQ sauce, meatballs in spaghetti sauce, etc.

But, they did have two King Cakes from Valu Market. Have never had the "real deal" so I can't compare them. It was tasty, but too much icing for my tastes.

Looks like the ones sold at the Deli at Paul's Fruit Market are from Nord's Bakery:

::chuckle:; When I've made them, I have required a "sign off" where the customer acknowledges understanding that there's a plastic baby inside and that it poses a choking hazard.

It's the times we live in.

We order sugar babies for the ones we'll be selling at the Bakery.

Having lived the first half of my life in New Orleans and being a supplier to the Bakery industrty, I would definitely order one from Haydel's Bakery. David always made a great product. And u can get it in a day.

Couldn't agree more. As New Orleans native like Harry, Haydel's is still the best by mail order.

Adrienne's in Jeffersonville. I believe that they are selling large king cakes and individual size ones as well.

We ended up getting a cream-cheese filled one from Nord's this morning. I blanched a little at the price ($28), but my family agreed that it was probably the best we've ever had, and we've had plenty.
