Good Meatloaf?

by Kim H » Sun Aug 26, 2007 10:49 pm

Every once in a while, I get a craving for some good, down-home comfort food, and today was one of those days. Out of the blue, I really wanted meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Thinking a diner type place would have what I wanted, we headed up to Goose Creek Diner. I was very disappointed. The meatloaf was dry, and the red gravy that was on it was so sweet that I would have rather had straight ketchup. The brown gravy on the mashed potatoes tasted like it came from a can. Not what I was looking for at all. I don't know when I'll have this craving again, but if I do, any suggestions where you can get good meatloaf out?

My daughter is a meatloaf lover and has enjoyed the meatloaf at Cottage Inn in the past. Don't know what it's like now that it's been sold.

Tologono

by Sherrie G » Mon Aug 27, 2007 7:27 am

I've only eaten Tologono's meatloaf once, but it the flavor was very good and it was very moist. I know that if I get a hankering for meatloaf, that's the place I'll go.

The downside is that you have to take the food home and reheat it yourself.

Does anyone happen to know when (or if) they will ever update their website? It's been "under construction" for a looong time now.

This is a functionally useless reply, since you can't go there any more.

But in the spirit of talking about local food, I can't help but mention that the meatloaf at the old Colonnade in the Starks Building basement was outstanding (and, in my opinion, one of the few things there that was).

I haven't had the meatloaf at Cottage Inn, but as best I can determine, the new owners (the folks from Mr. Z's) haven't changed the menu (or even the chef), they just cleaned up and re-painted the place, so if it was good before, it likely still is.

Ive been going to the Brown Bag ( Nords ) they have something called swiss steak which is actually a meatloaf with red gravy and great mashed potatoes. You need to get there before 11:30 AM this time of year, as U of L's in session to avoid the rush. I love that place, great prices and the folks that run it are great and always smiling. I was in there one day and they had a giant argument over how to pronounce Salmon Croquettes which was quite entertaining. Also have great sandwiches and chicken.

Goose Creek Diner has some really good comfort dishes. They have meatloaf and a meatloaf sandwich too. The food is really good!

That's interesting that they call meatloaf Swiss Steak. Growing up we had Swiss Steak, which was a cheap cut of meat that was braised for a long time in a tomato sauce with onions to tenderize it. the steak was then served with the sauce on top.

You're lucky. In our house the secret ingredient was dried onion-soup mix. :P

Meatloaf and Swiss Steak

by Stacy Roof » Mon Aug 27, 2007 9:13 am

I believe Meatloaf and Swiss Steak are two different dishes. My husband and I were brought up on your traditional meatloaf with a ketchup based sauce (I call it ketchup gravy because I hate it!). We also make Swiss steak with browned cubed round steak in a chunky tomato/green pepper sauce, which I love. Help me - am I alone?!!!

Cottage Inn still has good meatloaf.

As far as Swiss Steak and meatloaf, I remember from childhood that Swiss Steak was a flat, cubed cut of inexpensive meat served just the way you describe it, Stacy.

It looks like there are as many variations in Swiss Steak as there are in meatloaf! The Swiss steak I grew up with was like Ron's, a plain cheap cut of beef, not cubed that was braised in a tomato onion mixture. It was served with mashed potatoes and the sauce on top.

As far as meatloaf goes there are also many variations. I've had the one at Goose Creek Diner and sometimes it's very good and sometimes it's not! I've also had a very good meatloaf meal at Cunningham's as well as Lynn's. Of course personally you can't beat good homemade meatloaf! :P

Believe it or not, I had really good meatloaf just last week from the deli at Valu Market on Whittington Parkway. I wasn't expecting much, just grabbed it because I was there for something else, and was pleasantly surprised.

I just made meatloaf for dinner last night and it was awesome. I think the fact that my 7 year old had thirds will confirm that!
I will sat that I'm very leery of ordering meatloaf in a restaurant since there are so many incarnations of it, you never know if you'll like the one you get. But I do enjoy KT's meatloaf and real mashed potatoes, and I think they do a decent job with it.
