Louisville's top German spots?

by Laura SS » Fri Feb 25, 2011 11:01 pm

A dear family friend is coming to town next month for the bridge tournament, and he's got a soft spot in his heart for German cuisine. Sadly, he's mainly confined to the Galt House area and must dine at odd hours due to the tournament schedule -- but if this crew can name me some great German spots around time, maybe I can make that happen for him.

Thoughts?

To Jason's point, Eiderdown is great and does have some German selections, as does Coach Lamp.
But as Annemarie indicates Gasthaus & Erika's really are the only bona fide German restaurants in Louisville and run by genuine certified German people. I think there were more such places before the riots in the 19th century, old story... Gasthaus has it for the twee atmosphere and the food is terrific. They've been around since 1993 and are hard to beat. Erika's is worth a visit, more than one, with good execution on core dishes and around since 2004 so they've got their act down. Fine staff both places.
If your friend has unusual dining hours to consider you should call and check the hours of operation, don't know them off the top of my head:

Erika's 9301 Hurstbourne Park Blvd 499-8822
Gasthaus 4812 Brownsboro Rd 899-7177

I'm like Robin in that if a visitor could only get to one, Gasthaus would be my pick and would be the quickest place to get to and from by hopping on the Interstate for maybe 8-10 minutes. The Galt House is right on it and Gasthaus is right past the I-64 / I-71 split only minutes away. Google Maps or Mapquest both from the Galt House and you'll see.

Great, thanks all! I'd heard about Erika's and Gasthaus, but I had no idea that Eiderdown had German dishes as well. Let's hope we can make a trip!
