NA Exchange

by Troy McIntyre » Tue Feb 22, 2011 1:07 am

I have recently relocated to Southern Indiana. I haven't had the opportunity to yet experience many of the restaurants that receive great accolades on this forum. My first few experiences with local restaurants were less than stellar. I am not commenting on those experiences as a I don't want my first few posts to be negative.

So back to the intended topic....NA Exchange.

I have had a few lunches here over the last couple of weeks and can happily say, this place is great.

If I had to describe this place, I'd say they don't do anything new...but do what you are familiar with better.

My biggest pet peeve for restaurants is promoted flavor that doesn't exist in the actual dish. What I mean by this is that you order a lemon "x" that doesn't taste like lemon...you order a chipolte "x" that doesn't taste like chipolte, ect.

NA Exchange doesn't have this problem. The Cajun chicken sandwich actually has Cajun flavoring. It may be too Cajony for some, but if so, they should have ordered something else. The peppers are also cooked perfectly, not like the soft mush at many other places. The Bourbon Beer Cheese was amazing. It actually had a Bourbon aftertaste, which is rare.

The hamburger and homemade potatoe chips (shot out to Dan Quayle) were excellent as was the cheddar cheese atop the burger.

The real show stealer was the hummus. I can't recall if it was a Chipolte seasoning or another flavor, but it was amazing, as was the pretzel bread served with it, and the Bourbon Beer Cheese.

As far as constructive criticism, lose the waffle fries. They tasted perfectly fine, but just like every other waffle fry I have tasted. As I stated early, NA Exchange, to me, represents a better version of food you are familiar with. They tasted fine, but just like I can get at many other places. My other recommendation would be to utilize the pretzel bread, that is part of the Hummus and Bourbon Beer Cheese appetizers, as a bun for the chicken sandwich and burger.

Also, I'd like to mention how friendly the staff was. It's nice to feel that when you answer "How was everything?", that they actually care what your response is.

Nice review Troy....and welcome to the forum. Where'd you move from ? BTW...it's OK not to like places but you're probably spot on not to make your first couple of posts a shot across their bow. Again....Welcome.

Steve - I'm relocating from Nevada. I grew up about an hour outside Las Vegas and have lived in Las Vegas for the last 10 years.

Dan - If the $2 burger are anything like the burger I got, you are in for a treat. Since I make the greatest burgers in the world, I am an expert on the subject. The biggest thing NA Exchange does not do is over work the meat when forming the patty. You will taste the difference when you eat a NA burger.

I really liked my bison burger at NA exchange but the rest of the dinner was meh.

My 9 year old sent her buttered noodles back  because they tasted weird. But she loved the chicken fingers.

The Rock Shrimp appetizer was OK, but many of the pieces were just batter, no shrimp.

My wife had nachos which she liked.

We want to come back for lunch to try the Reuben.

Hi Art! First, let me appologize for your "meh" meal. The rock shrimp does tend to get some stray "shrapnel" from the beer batter if we are not careful (sometimes the fried batter can look just like shrimp I swear). As far as your daughters pasta goes, it's possable that she had Pappardelle and not Penne which is the norm and was taken aback by the look of it?? Regardless, it was our mistake and I hope you do indeed give us another shot. While we don't pretend to do anything "over the top", I do hope that what we do is more than "meh" as that is our goal. A very wise pan thowing Chef once told me it is better to do a few things really well than a lot of things poorly (Cheesecake factory comes to mind here). Anyway, my sincere appologies and please introduce yourself next time your in (I'll buy you a beer  )-Dave

We'll definitely be back. You have a nice place.

Upon further review, I guess I tossed out my "meh" a little too quickly. I apologize.

It wasn't the look of the pasta, it was the taste. Our server asked the chef and he said the buttered noodles were margarine instead of butter, but they just didn't taste right. That was no big deal really. FWIW, when my daughter got her Chicken Tenders, she declared them the best she's ever had

My daughter also loved the bison burger. She agreed with me it tasted awesome.

To summarize:

Rock shrimp, good but with shrapnel. :D
Nachos, wife liked them.
Bison burger, excellent.
Buttered noodles not good (but who cares?)
Chicken Tenders, best ever.

Thanks everyone for the support of The NA Exchange. Just to let everyone know about our Tuesday Night Promo, "Burgers & Bells", which is happening tonight. We will be offering a smaller version of our Exchange Burger for $2 served with a side of our housemade chips from 5-8. We will also be pouring $2 Bells 2 Hearted all day for $2. That's right, Burgers & Bells for $2 every Tuesday in March @ The NA Exchange.

We just got home from $2 burgers and are ready to go back and try the rest of the menu. My lil guy LOVED the chips... and the burger. My wife was reluctant to eat the beer cheese since it was cold, but she ended up liking it because the pretzel bread that came with it was phenomenal. All of that coupled with the $2 Bells= great deal!

Everyone do yourself a favor. Get the hummus. I'll personally reimburse you if you don't like it.
