True, but that's not what Shlomo is saying. He's just making a fairly valid point: Robert and his colleagues actually use data and forecast weather; they distribute the data, and the TV weather people use it to make their forecasts.

In principle he's right, and he's certainly not bashing Robert, although he may be bashing TV weatherpeople. ;)

I think that it was Schlomo's unfortunate first sentence that has led to a misunderstanding. After reading his entire post, I understood that he was complimenting Robert, but I was initially taken aback by the characterization that "

I think that it was Schlomo's unfortunate first sentence that has led to a misunderstanding. After reading his entire post, I understood that he was complimenting Robert, but I was initially taken aback by the initial characterization that "Robert's meteorology IS the crap that's on TV." When you first read that, it appears that Schlomo is designating Robert's work as crap.

we're speaking at cross purposes.

I understand that the TV weather people get their information from NWS and repeat it on their show. BUT, that's not the crap on TV I am talking about.

I am talking about all the "sky is falling" hyperbole, constant references to their Star Wars radar system, and how we all need to take a cyanide pill to end the inevitable suffering that we will endure when the grapefruit sized hail and 500 mph winds descend upon us. I've not heard any of that crap from Robert or the NWS.

The part of the weather that the TV people get from Robert and NWS is the only part that is not crap.

I agree. I think we ALL agree! I'm just saying - and maybe Vince called it right - that there seems to be a dispute here where none is needed. Shlomo didn't bash Robert, and we all agree that NWS data is objective whereas TV weather hype is not.

By the way, aren't there also national privatized services that provide independent forecasting to some stations? But maybe they start with NWS-generated data, too?

Predictions?.....

by Dan Thomas » Tue Mar 13, 2007 10:38 pm

Well, however the weather is predicted(with a 65% accuracy rate), is there a model that will help me fill out my bracket for the NCAA Tourney?! I'm stumped. Seedings be damned, there are way too may upsets lurking out there. Kind of like like a stationary cold front. It's too difficult for me to make an accurate prediction.

Robert,

I have always been curious--what is the general consensus about The Weather Channel? Does the NWS find them a help, hindrance, or both? When I'm around a computer they and NOAA (NWS) are my first source for weather info, and I've noticed that their forecasts and yours are not exactly the same (high temps, precip chances different, etc.), so I assume they get their info from their own people or some other place?
