Old Lightning Rod Day at Bank Street Brewhouse, this Sat.

by Roger A. Baylor » Mon Feb 14, 2011 9:20 am

We're a month late with the 2011 celebration of Ben Franklin's birthday, but NABC intends to have some added fun with it this year at Old Lightning Rod Day, coming this Saturday, February 19, at Bank Street Brewhouse (inside and on the covered patio).

It's a regular commemoration for us, and this year we're expanding the party (noon to 6 pm) in downtown New Albany.

The Colonial Ale is our annual seasonal batch of Old Lightning Rod, a dark libation brewed with molasses. There'll also be local wine, cider and spirits. Colonial Food is being cooked by "His Lordship’s Beef" (Caterers of Fine Victuals), otherwise known as Steve Thomas, owner of Thomas Family Winery in Madison IN, in conjunction with Chef Josh Lehman of BSB. There'll be period music, and if you dresss in Colonial-era attire, you get a free Old Lightning Rod poster, as designed by Tony Beard.

Anyone know where I can rent a costume suitable for 6' 4" and 255 lbs? :D

David Pierce reminds me that the molasses used for this year's Old Lightning Rod is from Country Rock Sorghum (Versailles KY), coming to us through Grasshopper Distribution. As Dave notes, "it just didn't seem right to buy the molasses at Kroger."

May I play the pedant here and point out that sorghum and molasses are two different things?

I took it to mean they supply molasses, too, although from a brewing standpoint, I'm not sure how much it matters. Hopefully Dave will explain.

I already admitted that I was being pedantic.

Hey ... not to hijack the thread, but I was impressed and delighted to read elsewhere about your entry into the electoral arena. Bring back two ears and a tail, please.

Sweet Sorghum aka Molasses is produced from sorghum cane as opposed to sugar cane. Processing the canes is similar, extract juice by crushing the cane and reduce the resulting liquid over flame. Other than Blackstrap Molasses, I've used sweet sorghum and molasses interchangeably. The end result in Old Lightning Rod will be the same, delicious.

Pardon me for bumping this as a reminder. I have my Colonial-era costume ready to go ... do you have yours?
