Good place for a first date?

by Adam Smith » Fri Feb 11, 2011 11:01 am

Preferably a bar, or restaurant with a bar area that isn't too loud, with good beer, mixed drinks and a bar menu. Keep in mind we both like beer, good beer 8)

I was thinking Holy Grale or Hammerheadswe haven't been to either place. The Blind Pig was a bit loud on my last visit so I'm thinking it'll be a good place for a second date.

What has been listed are probably the best options. No mixed drinks at NABC Bank Street or I would recommend it.

Proof

Great cocktails, a few great beers, bar menu, and a cool museum.

Oh yeah..... there is a hotel upstairs. 8)

Social also fits, but can get loud.

Ahem, new cocktail menu at Bank Street Brewhouse. We have always had a great selection of small batch Bourbon and other spirits.

As I remember it, Roger made a big deal out of not doing "mixed drinks" when you guys opened. I don't equate mixed drinks with cocktails, so I'm happy you guys are expanding choices. Just don't put coke in bourbon!

Bank St Brewhouse, eiderdown, and hammerheads are all excellent choices, and places I try to frequent as much as possible. Due to contractual obligations though I must recommend our new menu at Zanzabar and if you let me know when you're coming I'll send you out our bourbon, bacon, and Nord's Donuts bread pudding and make you look like a boss. Not to menu we have video games, which are excellent first date icebreakers.

What I meant to say is the use of mixed drink bothers me. A bourbon and coke, to me, is not a mixed drink. It's a bastardization of bourbon. But people call it a mixed drink. A Manhattan is a cocktail. It's also a mixed drink. I've just given the term "mixed drink" over to people who use it as a catch-all phrase for any mixture that includes alcohol. Bourbon and coke is bourbon with a mixer. A nasty, nasty mixer. Making one takes no talent. There's no science behind it.

My buddy, a former bartender, calls such drinks "alcohol delivery systems." Hide the alcohol behind sugar, and then pound.

Would cake be considered a chocolate delivery system, or perhaps pie an apple delivery system?

Not trying to be (too) cute. I love bourbon neat a/o cut with ice or water depending, but I like me some Weller and Vernors (and yes sometimes even coke) from time to time.

Those are sugar delivery systems.

I'm sure I'll get firebombed for saying this, but people who drink bourbons and coke like drinking alcohol (for whatever reason) but don't really like alcohol.

Back in the day we had the 3 date or $100 rule.....well I'm sure inflation has kicked in.
