Denny's shooting victims awarded $46m

by Marsha L. » Tue Feb 08, 2011 6:07 pm

...settled for $13m.

I'm not sure I agree with this ruling, but I'd have to have more details. What, did the restaurant employees shoot them themselves? Did they have a "drunk gun owners welcome" sign?

It is a horrible incident, but not Denny's fault; that could happen in any bar or restaurant. Do they want metal detectors and pat downs before eating a Grand Slam? People are throwing fits over airport security; I'd love to see the fallout over restaurant security.

I'm afraid one possible offshoot of lawsuits like this will be that fewer restaurants stay open 24/7 and others relocate away from dangerous areas. Again like most lawsuits the only winners are the lawyers.

"Most of the $13 million will go to Steve Tolenoa, a 31-year-old Kent, Wash."

I'm betting most goes to the attorneys.

It just makes me wonder if they did have security there, would the outcome have been any different. In my late night days we used to eat at IHOP and there were always off duty police there. But I'm not sure if having them there would have stopped the shooting. But maybe Dennys could have said they provided adequate security and were not to blame?
