Improving your "community"?

by Bill P » Thu Feb 03, 2011 3:06 pm

If you had it in your power to improve one thing about "greater Louisville and environs", what would that be? Please try to be specific as possible. I'll wait to see if this thread gains traction before chiming in.

Put the Courier-Journal (and Louisville Times) back the way they used to be.

More emphasis on higher education! It is instrumental in attracting better jobs.

Lets face it, we are very lucky to have held onto what's left of the large, union pay scale manufacturing jobs we have here in Louisville. Two Ford plants, GE, Raytheon, Jeffboat, Fire King and others offer, to those lucky enough to hold a job there, good paying jobs without requiring any higher education.
It wouldn't surprise me(or many others) to see more and more of those jobs being shipped off to Mexico or China.
For years and years, people from here have automatically assumed that they could land a good job at one of the aforementioned employers.
Those days are long gone but there is the better part of a generation of people around here that are far from retirement age that are seeing their jobs disappear and they are not qualified to do anything else.

Why? Because the push for jobs requiring a degree, which are usually high paying, has really only come around in the past few years, because our tax base has been flush with high paying blue collar gigs. Why would any one tip over the apple cart?
Here's a great article in LEO about this...

I dunno Winger...I kinda like it the way it is. Kinda a "three little bears" place...Not to hard, not too soft...but jusssssst right. That was my impression when we moved here and it's one I still hold...Seriously.

OK...ok...if I HAD to fall off of the fence...Public Education. Let's face it, right wrong or indifferent the perception is that the schools can be <ehh-hem> somewhat lacking. Whether that is primarily the result of inferior educators and/or administrators (which some people would like you to believe) or whether it is more the result of socio-factors outside of the schools...like out of control kids and parents who don't know how to parent (which is what I happen to believe)...The schools could use a boost. Personally...I subscribe to the theory that if you started paying teachers what they are REALLY worth, stopped throwing good money after bad and started kicking a little (student/parent) ass and taking a few names that this perception (reality ?) could be reversed.

Whew...Can anyone tell I need a little more fiber in my diet

Winger,

Nahhhhh....I already paid for those plows in a previous rant. But since you brought it up we COULD take that 450K of tax dollars the city is paying to save the "facades" on those "historic" (but dilapidated and technically un-salvageable) buildings down on Main St. and buy a few extras...for parts if nothing else

Yep, I can see it now...Me and ol' Phil running as "co-Mayors" in the next election...I'd tear the sh** down and ol' Phil could put up a few of his new developments. We'd be the envy of New York and Paris

Lord knows I need something about right now...I've been in a pis** mood all day (and I've got at least 4 other people who will back me up on that). I think cabin fever must be setting in...Gonna have to either ditch this retirement gig and find me a job or start drinking more. Either one works for me. What say ? Does anyone know of a nice cushy guv'ment job I could settle in to :D (How about director of Snow Plows ?)
