NY Pizza at BoomBozz... My Take

by David H. » Wed Feb 02, 2011 11:05 am

I thought I'd start a new thread since the other one seems to have come off the tracks...

But first, a disclaimer: I am not a New Yorker, but I love pizza. Whenever I go up to NYC, I usually get a slice at a street corner place (many times within a few hours of getting off the plane). We also usually go to a more upscale pizzeria later in the trip. I've tried several different styles of NY pizza and enjoy them all.

I went to BoomBozz last night to try the NY pizza, and I thought it was fantastic. Big, foldable slices with high-quality ingredients. There was some "grease" on the pizza, but not an excessive amount (I would say just right :D ). Combine this with the Taphouse Tuesday beer special ($2 pints of Sierra Nevada) and the 1/2 price apps during Happy Hour, and it makes for a great meal. Three of us were able to get one app, five beers, one NY pizza and a sandwich for $40 before tip.

It may not have been a "true" NY pie by some measures, but I don't think any creation here (or in NY for that matter) will be as good as what people may remember from years past. I personally couldn't care less what we call it. Can't we just all agree to call it what it really is: a darn good piece of pizza :D

Thank you, Tony for adding this back on the menu. It's hard for me to go anywhere else on Tuesday evenings.

I've been to Boombozz taphouse several times and tried several pies including the Pollotate, Buffalo chicken and Pesto Roma. To be honest, their pizzas do not appeal to me. I'm not saying they are low quality or anything. They just lacked flavor to me. For example, the pollotate had roasted potatoes on it, but the potatoes themselves had very little flavor and that was the dominant ingredient, so it was like eating potatoes on crust with some cheese. Carb overload. (In fairness i will say that i do not like red onions and i left those off, so that might have tied the flavor together for some people.)

I do however like the restaurant and will continue to return. Lots of good beer, good location, plenty of tvs for watching games. Next time i will just try a sandwich or calzone instead.I will say that my wife likes the pizza. I can see why it appeals to many people, just not so much for some like myself who prefer "regular" pizza aka tomato sauce, meat, cheese.

I'm still a bit partial to the Nonna (Neapolitan-style) pizza. Even if I want to order something else, the words that usually come out of my mouth when the server asks are, "Nonna, please."

Some of the more "creative" pies have been a little hit-and-miss for me (BBQ brisket pizza, while cringe-worthy as it may sound to some, was actually really good), but there is enough on the menu to make everyone happy.

Love the Nonna. Can't bring myself to order anything else. Will try the NY style one of these days.

For anyone who does decide to go the sandwich route, try the "Grilled Chicken Portobello". It's fantastic! I can't help but to order one every time I go, as much as I want to explore the rest of the menu. Full of flavor, the melted cheese and mushrooms give it an awesome texture, and the bread is always fresh. I can't wait to have another!
