Healthy Schools Challenge

by Dan Thomas » Tue Feb 01, 2011 1:50 pm

I was quite surprised to see some of my handiwork on the front page of the Metro section today in the C-J. It's hard to explain to people exactly what I do, but this is part of my gig.
Anyway, yesterday was quite the big deal around here at the Nutrition Service Center with several VIPs touring the facility and out at Coral Ridge Elementary where 77 awards were passed out.

Here's a link to the story....

And a couple more photos of stuff I put out at the awards reception........

very nice, and good to see that changes are being made. I always ask my girls what they had for lunch, and the answer i usually get is: chicken poppers and fries. I hate that, i try to feed my children well and bothers me that they do not have good options at school. My oldest daughter just told me that they added a salad bar at her high school, and she usually gets that for lunch now. Most of the time though both of my girls take lunch to school, and not crappy stuff, but good sandwiches with fruit and juice, my oldest daughter just realized they have a microwave at school so she has begun taking leftovers on some days.

are you part of the changes that are being made? what brought it on finally changing the food for the children?

I was especially happy to read about using local produce - even processing it for use during the non-growing season.

I recently read the Fed Up with School blog (yes, I read the whole thing) so this issue has been on my mind lately. I was rather sickened by the photos I saw of her school's food. I think what you're doing is a step in the right direction. I'm so happy to read that JCPS is taking a leadership role in this movement.
