Downtown lunch suggestions?

by SheilaB » Mon Mar 12, 2007 1:16 pm

Looking for recommendations as to good, not too expensive, downtown lunch spots.

It seems like we spend five minutes every day discussing where to go for lunch and other than Safier's we can't seem to come up with anything above mediocre without spending $10+ on lunch. I feel like there might be some gems out there that just aren't in my consciousness. My office is at 5th & Jefferson, but now that Spring is almost here we're willing to walk a ways for some good food.

Saffron, Bistro 301, Mellilo's, Jarfi's, Los Aztecas, Old Spaghetti Factory, Luigis, Bristol many more I'm missing but there is a start.

J. Gumbo's

by TanyaD » Mon Mar 12, 2007 1:41 pm

In a couple of months you'll be able to go to J. Gumbo's (name changing from Gumbo-A-Go-Go) at 4th St. Live--most of their entrees are all $5. Highly recommended!

downtown lunch suggestions

by Michelle Manker » Mon Mar 12, 2007 7:08 pm

BBC on 4th at Theatre Square is a recent discovery. My understanding is they are under new ownership & have released a new menu. Everything I have eaten thus far has been really good and the atmosphere is so pleasant and comfortable. Totally reasonable in price. It's absolutely a new favorite.

Thanks for that news, Michelle. Last time I tried to eat there it wasn't good and that s a great location. I'll have to give it another try.

Downtown lunch spots.

by Doogy R » Mon Mar 12, 2007 7:46 pm

I like all the places that have been mentioned and have a few to add. Heiztman's, Delta, Down to Lunch Cafe, Yaching's, Bearno's, Gavi's, TC's Sandwich Shop, Main Eatery and the Mayan Cafe. I work at 5th and Main and find that all of these are within walking distance. If you need more detail about any of these spots, feel free to PM me.

Saffrons

I highly recommend Saffron for lunch. I used to work downtown at 2nd & Market and went there frequently. The food is great, and it's one of the few ethnic choices in that area for something different for lunch. If the Lamb shanks are on the menu, it's a definite treat...

Olive's almost fills the hole that The Colonade left.

Okay, I give. What I should have said was it used to be one of the few ethnic in that area....(It was one of very few several years ago when I worked downtown and many of the other suggestions are quite a walk from 2nd & Market which was my reference point)

Love Olive's. They use Boars Head meats, and the sandwiches are huge.

They also have homemade breakfast sandwiches on biscuits or croissants in the mornings.

Highland Coffee next to The Palace also has a lunch menu. They have delicious panini's. Kind of pricey, but it's worth it.

Oh yes, I forgot all about Highland Coffee. Their sandwiches are fantastic, and I love that they give a bit of fruit/veggie chips on the side, just for a change. I've been brown-bagging it most of the year, so I've forgotten all the places there are to go around here.

And, as always, City Cafe.

City Cafe

by Dan Thomas » Tue Mar 13, 2007 10:53 pm

Overlooked alot, the City Cafe has been doing it pretty well for a long time. Some specials are better than others.... But for the most part, you can't find a lunch spot downtown that compares for the money.
