Louisville Mag's best bars

by Phil Gissen » Mon Jan 31, 2011 1:35 pm

Well, since my last post was only met with a modicum of "working class hero" derision, I will attempt to wade in on another opinion. I just received December's Louisville Magazine's issue (The U.S. Post Office change of address delivery process is about on par with Haiti's infrastructure) and read their best bars article with interest and excitement. Although the "Back Door" is a fun venue and certainly redolent with Louisville's penchant for down to earth ambiance, I found many fine lounges left out of the article. In addition, one's taste in drinking holes is often dependent on your age and place in life. Twenty years ago, when I was still on the prowl, I hated going to what would be labeled a "couple's bar." Thus, an article like this is so darn difficult to do well. Some of my favorite bars left out: (This almost sounds like a sports talk show analysing an all star team selection)

Dark Star
Jacks
Corbetts
The Hideaway
Seviche
Varanese
Asiatique
Bourbon Bistro
Do you guys have any other opinions? Thanks

What bars made the list?

Having spent my time at the Oakroom/seelbach the poor old seelbach bar is not one of the best bars in Louisville. Besides the jazz a few nights a week and the bourbon selection it has nothing going for it. For such a beautiful hotel the only way I can describe the decor in OSB is dank. If it's supposed to be a step back in time, I think they landed somewhere around the late 70's/early 80's.
Now the Ante Room Bar infront of the Oakroom, that is a beautiful bar. Plush leather chairs, marble floors, a grand piano. If they just had someone up there playing the dang thing and maybe a bartender it would have no reason not to be one of the best bars in Louisville.

It's clear that they were trying to cover as much of Louisville as possible. The "additions" that have been suggested all fall downtown, on Bardstown/Baxter, Frankfort, or in the East End. As stupid as the list is - and it is stupid for countless reasons - kudos to Louisville Mag for trying to cover much of the "Louisville" area.

People have many reasons to think Louisville is or is not great. or somewhere in-between. There will be many things I miss about Louisville when I leave, but I don't think I'll miss the bar options (aside from the glorious microbreweries). Louisville's heavy on on quantity and light on quality when it comes to bars.

The list can be informational. I don't know anything about The Shed, The Sea Hag, Starbase Q, or O'Dolly's. So I learned something new reading the article, and I now know new places to visit.

It's the lower-level bar at Village Anchor Pub & Roost in Anchorage. Nice place.

It's probably more like they're trying to offend as few people as possible so we don't lose readership. What they should've done is select several truly classic bars in Louisville he'd done any in depth review of them including there drink specials and bartenders!

More likely they were trying to include as many as possible to pump up some advertising.
