Weekend Eats; Stacked at Staxx's

We started off Friday at Staxx and walking in at 7pm there was a 35 minute wait. The big restaurant was full. We waited in the bar and had a cocktail and listed to the live music. Staxx has a rustic feel that is warm and inviting and the bar area had a festive vibe and was completely full also.

We were seated in about 20 minutes and greeted by a nice server. Perusing the menu one quickly gets the feel that Staxx is built to deliver MEAT. There are ribs, sirloins, ribyeye, a 32 oz porterhouse, braised short ribs, prime rib in varying sizes, pulled pork, chicken, fried pork chops and even seafood - I don't think there was any type of meat that was not on the menu.

We started with the lump crab cakes. My expectations were very high with a price of $13.95. The appetizer was brought out quickly. The cakes simply were not cooked properly with no browning, crust or crunch whatsoever. For the price and a fairly small portion of two small cakes they need to be GREAT and they were below average. Thankfully, things would only get much better.

I ordered the short ribs with mashed potatoes and side salad. The ribs were delicious; tender with very tasty, rich, brown gravy and at $10.99 a great value. The sides of mashed potatoes were also fine as was the fresh, crisp side salad. My lady friend had the blackened prime rib. She ordered a 12 oz portion but it looked to be well over a pound. It was cooked perfect, seasoned wonderfully and was tender and had a great flavor. Her sides of dirty rice and veggies were very good.

We finished with the Coconut Cream pie and it was fresh, light and delicious.

Our bar tab was $13 for two drinks and a $2 tip. Our dinner tab was $48 with a $9 tip.

The overall experience was warm, inviting and rustic and Staxx definitely delivers on its "roadhouse" feel. We will return soon and hope Staxx continues to stay busy!

My husband and I tried Staxx for the first time as well. We started out with the blackberry rib appetizer and although it was a good effort, they were just a bit too sweet for our taste. We each had the smoked brisket for our entrees and thoroughly enjoyed it. The pickles on the side were the perfect touch. I had a baked sweet potato as my side and can honestly say it was cooked PERFECTLY. I was thrilled.

We were there on Saturday!

For info, they DO take reservations, which we had made; came in at 7, and the line was out the door, but we were seated within 2 minutes. My wife had the sea bass, which was (at about $20) very inexpensive. It was a small portion (acceptable given the low cost), and absolutely wonderful! I had the vege pasta (decent - nothing to warrant a special trip) and wife & I split a half rack "side".

Next time (and there WILL be a next time) I'm just having meat! The ribs were a tad too soft for me; they were St. Louis cut, which I like better than baby backs, but I like more "bite" to them; wife loves ribs that fall off the bone and these did. Saw some steaks around us, and they looked great!

Only possible negative is that the beer list seems to concentrate on mass-market Americans. I would have liked more of a choice of interesting crafts or imports. Won't stop us from coming back, just that I expected (or rather hoped for) some Cajun small-batches given the providence of the management.
