iPhone view now in place for forums ... check it out!

by Robin Garr » Thu Jan 27, 2011 4:09 pm

Check it out on your iPhones and let me know what you think! Looks great, and really easy to use, on mine.

No special action needed, just go to the regular link,
viewforum.php?f=1
and it should recognize the iPhone calling home and respond with the smartphone view.

Also, please take a look with other smartphones, as we're not sure what will happen. Best case, either you'll get a great smartphone view, or you'll get the regular forum. If you get something funky, please let me know - or let us know regardless! :)

looks good on my iphone.
edit: I see no text on the login screen to denote what field each line is, I figured it out, but wanted to let you know.

Thanks! Noted, but to clarify, it's an opern-source plug-in and we're pretty much stuck with what the designer wrote. Mary is looking at the CSS to see if some small tweaks are reasonable, but at this point we're just trying to keep up with developments and share this stuff as it becomes available. :)

Yesterday I got my iphone 4 and immediately used the forum view while choosing a place for dinner last night. Very easy to navigate. You may want to add the 'by location' tool as it would be handy when in an unfamiliar part of town.

Tell me more ... I'm not sure it's available with this plug-in, though ...

Ideally it would be nice to be able to use your current location(iphone GPS) along with you list of restaurant reviews in order to find somewhere close by to eat. But if that's not possible, just your "restaurants by neighborhood" list would be good.

+1! That is a tantalizingly wonderful idea -- "I'm hungry, what's nearby that the foodies like ..."

I'd love it, but I'm not sure our little Internet company made up of English majors who don't really know how to do anything but write will be able to make it happen. We're really out on the ragged edge with this smartphone display stuff. But keep the wish list coming, you never know!

This renders great on my Android phone.

Color me impressed.

Thank the gnomes again.

I've been waiting to chime in hoping the situation would correct itself, but no one else has mentioned that their Hotbytes forum page is 95% broken... mine is :-(. I'm missing the option on my Blackberry to highlight a topic and link up with the body of it. Looking at it now, I can choose the Valentines Day topic or the 40th B-day topic, but all other threads are locked and I have zero options at the bottom of the page. I haven't tried to troubleshoot my browser yet, but everything worked dandy before the recent upgrades. My phone is only a year old, too, and I do update it regularly. Help? I can't be all alone here, can I?

This is big bummer for me because I read Hotbytes on my phone every day.

Okay, it doesn't look like the smartphone plug-ins are working the way we want them to. Mary knocked her brains out all day trying to figure out a way to make them optional, but it's not looking good. :(

So, don't worry, we promised everyone that we wouldn't force this on you if we couldn't make it right. I'll ask her to remove them tomorrow if we continue unable to make them any better than this.

Jackie, think of yourself as a heirloom quilt!

Not to worry, others have also mentioned issues with it. If only we could make it an OPTION rather than forcing it on smartphones, iPhones and iPads, but Mary hasn't been able to find a way.

Again, any PHP programming wizards out there? We'd love to have some skilled help!

My 12 year old and I dabble in php but something like this i would probably just google around. I do know a few experts though. I'll ask them.
