New York Style Bagels

Who has the best NY bagels in town? I'm not looking for bagels gussied up with fruits, nuts, tofu, multi-grain flour or similar impostors to the real thing..

Oh, THIS could be a long thread. :P

Sadly, none comes close. A place called Sid's (in the St. Matthews spot that now houses the new Simply Thai, where Bazo's and Thatsa Wrapp used to be ;) , made a pretty good one. So did their short-lived successor, a chain called Bruegger's.

Nothing that's left really does a great job of impersonating a NY bagel. Nancy's frankly offends me with their departure from authenticity. In my opinion - and I think it's a fairly considered opinion since I knew NYC bagels as a kid in the '60s and again living there as an adult in the '90s - Dooley's and Breadworks come the closest of a lackluster lot. But they'll never come close to Second Avenue Deli or, in Astoria, Bagel Boys.

On the other hand, he says grumpily, even NYC bagels don't come close to what they used to be. Harrumph!

You do know, of course, that NYC bagel bakeries are doing that now, too? It's not a geographical thing, I think it's a generational thing.

But if it's the chewy style of an authentic bagel you're looking for, I still say Dooley's or Breadworks are the best you're going to do locally. If someone can surprise me with another contender, I'll be delighted to hear about it.

Do we still have any Dooley's left?

Not trying to start an anti-chain flame war, but Panera has a pretty good bagel.

Isn't the one on Lime Kiln still going strong? Google still lists a bunch, but who knows how up-to-date their listing is?

annemarie m wrote:i'm not saying these are new york style bagels, but since the bagel shops are shrinking here in louisville what about panera bread and their bagels? also does einstein bagels still exist here.

No Einstein in Louisville that I know of. I have picked up bagels on occasion at the Einstein's in the then-Delta concourse at Detroit airport and wasn't overly impressed.

I'm not being anti-chain here, but specifically critical: Panera's breads in general have never impressed me, and I would never even have dreamed of trying a "bagel" there. Do they make any claim to authenticity? I get a bad vibe from Panera because they promote "bread fresh baked daily" when it's no secret that they actually ship in parbaked loaves from a commissary in St. Louis. This process can yield decent bread, but when they lead with a lie, it bothers me.

"Our bakers work through the night, shaping and scoring the dough by hand, to bring you fresh-baked bread every morning and throughout the day. All Panera breads are made from only the freshest dough using our own recipes and only unbleached flour."

Uh huh.

There is an Einstein Bagle outlet at U of L, but I think that's the only one in town.
I'd probably attribute the shrinking number of bagel outlets to the high glycemic index of bagels. If you're watching your blood sugar, bagels rank up there with baked potatoes and ice cream.

I'm pretty sure there is one in the Hyatt @/around 4th St. Live.

I think there's also an Einstein's in the Hyatt downtown where the gallery used to be.

Einsteins is listed at 320 W. Jefferson, but the entrance is on 4th St, connected to the Hyatt Regency Hotel. I go there about once every 2 weeks for a lox and bagel as a reward for showing up to work all week :D Not authentic NY, but not bad. I have also gotten a dozen of bagels for the office for $13.00, not a bad price and the bagels are HUGE. I normally do a sesame bagel (not authentic, oh well!), but I am getting fond of the asiago cheese bagels now.

No offense, buddy, but I was just thinking that you're a lot more broad-minded about not-NYC bagels than you are about not-NYC pizza!

Hmm, guess I'm the only person who doesn't give a flip about the "authenticity" of my bagel. I consider it a comfort food, and something I splurge on if I'm in the mood.
Toasted & loaded w/ cream cheese most any fresh bagel is good food.

I love bagels, of all types.

Cinnamon Crunch bagel @ Panera w/ Hazlenut Cream Cheese is the devil.
