Roosters opening in Clarksville

by Mark P » Mon Jan 24, 2011 10:54 pm

I've been noticing some work going on in the old Damon's building behind Greentree Mall (adjacent to Neil Huffman Honda) recently, and today the Roosters sign was up.

If I recall correctly from reviewing the Rooster's on Preston, they do pretty darn good wings.

Roosters (at least the one on Preston) is really hit or miss with their wings - they use a very good sized wing, which is a plus, but they also bread them. Sometimes they come out nice and crisp, and other times they are kinda damp and greasy - when they are 'on', they are a solid wing choice.

They do offer 'combos' of their wing sauces now, which is really nice. For example - if you want BBQ, but want a little kick along with it, you can get a BBQ/Killer mix (my go-to when I eat there). Unlike most places, the top heat on the scale, Super Killer, actually has pretty good flavor too - places like B-dubs and their Blazin just shoot for pure heat, but the SK is both hot and tasty. The Chipotle is a pretty tasty sauce too.

For being a 'wing joint', they do a pretty respectable job with sandwiches and pizza too. Not gourmet by any stretch of the imagination, but @ $6.99 for a 9 inch pie, it is a pretty decent meal - the BBQ chicken pizza even comes with a BBQ wing on top for added effect. The Reuben Sub is a nice little sammich too - its not going to win any awards for being the best reuben or anything, but it is pretty tasty. Also worthy of mention - the Mexi-Chick (spiced grilled chicken w/ salsa, sour cream, and jalapenos), and the BLT, which was pretty much a monument to bacon the one time I ordered it - had to spend considerable time re-engineering the thing just to make all the bacon fit.

(I'm a regular at the Preston location during NFL season - I plant my hiney at a table there just about every Sunday afternoon for a dose of the 4pm games. Cheap, cold domestic swill, good service, reasonably priced and good quality food, and every game on a screen somewhere - the perfect way to waste an afternoon)

I went to the Preston Hwy Rooster's on Sunday and wasn't too impressed. Decent enough wings, overcooked boneless wings and average chili fries. Beer prices were pretty low but not much of a selection; aside from the usual swill they had Guinness, Sierra Nevada and Killian's on tap. Still, I think the next time I want to watch a game with wings and beer I'll go to Hoops, or try Bungalow Joe's, or Rootie's... or just stay in and make my own.

My experience with Roosters (breaded) wings is that if you get them piping hot from the fryer, they're a decent wing. Let those wings lie under a heat lamp for 5 minutes...or dally about consuming them and they become the most soggy unappetizing thing imaginable.

Of course, a wing snob would question the validity of breaded wings from the get-go. That sure ain't Buffalo-style. :P

I'm typically a 'breaded wing hater' - mostly because the places that bread their wings usually do so because they are compensating for a shortcoming in the wing itself. The breading is the 'expensive sports car' wrapped around the tiny little wing, if you will.

Roosters is a bit different because they use a pretty large wing, and the breading is fairly reasonable in volume so I give them a pass on that. Steve's point about getting them fresh is very true though - if there is a crowd there that could impede quick delivery or you're planning on sitting around and eating casually over time, order a pizza or a sandwich and skip the wings. (And order a side of the wing sauce for dipping the pizza crusts in)

Hey, like Popeye always said "I yam what I yam". That was Popeye wasn't it ?

BTW...in addition to having a pizza named after me...If you go into Rooties and ask for "The Steve and Becky Special" they will (without questioning) deliver you up 25 wings, all drummies, hot, well done, extra celery and Blue Cheese, a side of suicide sauce and a pitcher of Bud. :P Just sayin. :P

Mushrooms on a white pizza? People are getting real loose with their definition of White Pizza. Of course people like to put ranch on a crust and still call it pizza.
I am the original Mike G, never mind the impostor.

I am kind of a big deal.

I'm happy just to see something go into that building after all these years. Now for something to move into the empty building next to me.... I'm a good neighbor, I swear!

How would order the S & B Special without the pitcher of water?
