Steaks, steaks & more steaks

by David Lange » Wed Jan 19, 2011 6:21 pm

Last weekend a few friends and I engaged in a discussion of the new Eddie Merlot's restaurant downtown. 2 of my friends had been there for the soft opening and remarked how upscale it was and how good the food selection was. The question came up, however, that with 3 very upscale steak-oriented restaurants (Eddie Merlot's, Jeff Ruby's, and Morton's) in relatively the same area of Louisville's dining scene, would Louisville diners support all three or would one experience a tragic demise. Since the price point for all 3 is very similar and definitely on the higher end, would all three generate enough business to survive.

The wife and I were in both Morton's and Ruby's Sat. night and both were packed. There were people waiting for seats in the lounge at 8:30, so maybe all three will make it. Ruby's and Merlot's also lean toward seafood more than Morton's.

It's definitely an interesting question. Of course I'm sure that Eddie Merlot's has some type of plan and has considered all of the risks and rewards. Only time will tell but let's all hope that the economy stabilizes and all business starts to improve for restaurants and all others.

I just posted my review of their soft opening a couple of days ago. Hands down, Eddie Merlot's blew the other two places out of the water, in my opinion. Of course, that's just my opinion and I am sure others will differ. I pretty much loved the place though.

There are very few steak houses that have not done well around the country, especially when they are backed up with the financial resources of a "chain" or franchise. I have been to all of these steak houses and have enjoyed Mortons the most. I felt Jack Ruby's ambiance to be more tacky then the hot tub at the Palms-Las Vegas. Why don't people frequent Pats more since it's local and independent? I did enjoy my meal there and it was a great deal less expensive then Mortons.

Was that review posted on here or somewhere else? I'd be interested in reading it.

It's on here. Bottom of the page by now, I think. I was battling the sore throat from hell with fever when I wrote it so it may not be entirely coherent. :D

No steak: just raw oysters, cocktails/beer, and Robbie Bartlett. If you have never seen Robbie Bartlett, you are missing out.

Sorry, I was talking about Robbie. Why do they put the b and n so close?

Not Louisville but had to share: my favorite steak house in NYC (aside from Peter Luger's, and Sparks)

Looks like an interesting restaurant and the prices are not bad at all compared to others in NYC!

Justin had a new pinky ring to try out.
