Tried Cocos Lokos Sunday buffet

by Linda C » Mon Jan 17, 2011 3:49 pm

I've been her twice. Loved the vegetarian empanadas, loved the Coconut shrimp and also had tilapia once which was great. My daughter had chicken skewers and liked it.

However, we had 7 for the lunch buffet yesterday and all of us were disappointed. It just wasn't anything like the normal menu. There was a small salad area with a few desserts. The entrees were all pork, chicken or beef. The only vegetarian items were the rice, black beans and ? plantains or yucca. I love good black beans, they do them right at Havana Rumba and they are great at Ramsi's, but these had an odd metallic taste to them. We were adding queso and chipotle dressing to give them ANY flavor. My husband is the least picky eater I know and he said "it was just okay". My daughter and I eat fish and vegetarian items and found little to fill us up. In a restaurant where they serve several fish entrees and appetizers, you'd think there would be ONE entree. I won't go back for the buffet, only the menu items.

We've been once for the regular menu and I was disappointed in the near lack of vegetarian choices. Food was good, and it's a nice option out in suburban mainly chain land.

I tried Coco Lokos for the first time Sunday. I chose the buffet. All I can say is "meh." Nothing was bad, but nothing was "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" either. The best were the plantain, yucca and coconut flan.

But most of all I was astounded by the decor which was "the more, the better." Busy, busy, busy. Nothing about it worked to give pleasant, relaxing ambience.

The ladies bathroom was in a sad state of neglect.

I'm not saying I won't ever go back, but it is no longer a place that I am anxious to visit.

I don't blame them for trying a buffet when they are surrounded by them. We went Sunday as well. I personally found that the buffet items were lacking the same care in preparation if the same items would have been ordered off the menu. It wasn't bad, but the buffet didn't reflect the same good food I have previously had there on several occasions.

I was there as well yesterday (with Gayle). I thought the yucca and flan were both delicious. Got a kick out of the large steel bowls filled with mayo and mustard packs - not sure what those were for - more kitschy decor? I thought it was worth the $11 ticket price if you're a meat eater and don't mind trying the most common dishes they serve. Every entree on the buffet is listed on the menu as $12.99 and higher, so there's that to consider. I went hoping for some ceviche on the cold side because of the previous thread and there was none of that, be warned. The highlight was the company I was keeping :-)!

My husband and I went yesterday and had the lunch buffet. Granted, it isn't as extensive as their menu, but everything was fresh and delicious, and you can't beat the price. It was only $7! We'll be back!
