NY Pizza

by Bob Sokoler » Mon Jan 17, 2011 2:23 pm

I saw a comment about NY style pizza places in Louisville. The two I would visit:
1) Frascelli's Pizzeria and Restaurant in Crestwood Station (Crestwood) - Great Pizza, plenty of room to spread out..stay away from Karoake nights (ouch).
2) Papalinos NY Pizzeria Baxter Avenue Louisville - Great Pizza but be prepared to be cramped into a small eat-in area. This place is ready to expand!

We have quite a few good NY options these days.

My current favorite is DiOrio's.

...old favorite was Perfetto, but I'm rarely on that side of town anymore. Luigi's is unreal, but I'm never downtown at lunchtime.

Spinelli's can be good, and of course Papalino's.

Second DiOrios in St. Matthews.
Had lunch there today, got a 20" cheese pizza for $17.95 - 8 huge slices brought the rest home.

Orange oil, carmelized cheese, buttery medium crust, and fresh and hot.
The guys make their own dough and sauce, met some of the wait staff, and one of the owners wives who had lunch with her kids, and dove right in to help out and bus tables "while she was there" .

The decor is masculine, and tasteful, exposed brick walls and Art deco, and Murano glass light fixtures add warmth. The booths are beautiful red vinyl with nailhead trim, the dining tables are distressed black painted plank table tops. Usually decor does not play into a pizza joint, but this was carefully thought out and very appealing.

Enjoyed it immensely, and the cokes (at least 20oz) were only a buck seventy five! and free refills.
That is the only time I ever have a soft drink is with pizza, somehow they just go together.

Buon Appetito

Perfetto is pretty darn good. They have a nice thin crispy crust. The family that runs it are very nice people as well.
But my personal favorite is Papalino's for sure.

I'm a big Perfetto fan. Love their pizza. Was in there last week and had some of their homemade ravioli. We were with another couple, of which the wife is a dyed-in-the-wool Italian girl from Philadelphia. She says they were the best she's had since her mother died many years ago. Pretty good recommendation.

Bob,

:P Not saying NY Pizza doesn't deserve it's own topic...but if you hang around here long enough (welcome to the forum BTW) you will discover that every topic eventually makes it's way full circle and ends up morphing into a subject addressing at least one (and usually more) of the following:

1) Pizza
2) Beer
3) Bratty kids in restaurants
4) Crappy service
5) Ice/No ice in Cokes

Usually....nahhhh make that (just) quite often, before it's all said and done someone gets their wittle feewings hurt but in the end we all kinda sorta kiss and make up. Except Annemarie...piss her off and she'll call her friend "Rocco" (Isn't that right Annemarie ?)

Anyway...NY Pizza. I was pretty big on Frascelli's for a while BUT have kinda come to the conclusion that other people do it a lot better. The primary problem with Frascelli's is that their crust gets way to soggy...way to quick. Order a large pizza and 5 minutes after it hits the table the center of the crust is like a piece of wet wonder bread. Were it not for the fact that the place is a crawl back from my house I'd probably not go there. Papalino's...<sigh>...Yeah, they're kinda considered the Holy Grail of NY pizza or at least they are treated as such here on the forum. Personally, speaking as an "old school" pizza afficianado, I think they sold out when they started creating all those goofier than a sh** house rat variations on America's most popular dish. I mean a Hot Brown Pizza ???? Fer cryin' out loud, respect the pie will ya. <Sigh>...What the hell though, it works for the Highlands hipster crowd...So it's all good.

What about the 'burbs vs. the Highlands/downtown? That's always good for some chatter.

I do love me some Johnny's - Johnny, Brooke and Angel are awesome! I especially love their meatball pizza - YUM!!!

I must admit, this Queens girl is obsessed with Papalino's, but hearing more and more people talk about DiOrio's in StM makes me want to check them out this weekend. Now if I could only find a place that makes bialys - I would be a very happy girl!
