Smartphone view for HotBytes review pages

by Robin Garr » Sat Jan 15, 2011 5:33 pm

Well, the gnomes have been at work behind the scenes, and they've come up with another exciting new feature. 8)

When you go to www.LouisvilleHotBytes.com with a smartphone, the system should detect that and present the front page and reviews in easy-to-read smartphone format without your having to do anything special to make it happen.

(And if for some reason you actually WANT the full version on your smartphone and shrink or zoom or pull around the page, just go to the bottom of the smartphone view and click "View Full Version," and you've got it.)

If you're looking at the forum on a laptop or desktop but want to see what a smartphone sees, feel free: Click
http://www.louisvillehotbytes.com/?iPhone (iPhone)
or
http://www.louisvillehotbytes.com/?mobile (Android, other)

We could use help testing, especially with smartphones other than iPhone, so if you have an Android or Blackberry or Palm, kindly click http://www.LouisvilleHotBytes.com and let us know if a usable smartphone view comes up for you.

Thanks for any trouble-shooting help, and enjoy!

(PS: Curious if we are going to present a smartphone view for the forum? Not yet. There are some smartphone solutions for the forum software in development, but the few that are ready for installation now don't impress us with their usability factor. Maybe in a few months when things move along.)

Robin,

I have a Blackberry Storm 2 through work. I just spot checked the site and it looks good so far. I'll hammer on it later and see if I can break it.

Thanks, Pete. It's nothing we wrote up on the back of an envelope, but a developed Word Press plug-in, and it seems to be stable. Still, let me know if it gets funky on ya.

You know, Mary asked about that. :D I do think having a neat optimized view show up in your Safari browser is about as far as we're going to go. That said, you know how to save a HotBytes bookmark as a screen icon, don't you? ;)

We actually looked at Tapatalk, Art, and thanks for the reference. We're moving slow on this one, considering that the forum really isn't all that hard to use direct with Safari on the iPhone, with a bit of shrinking and zooming. I assume it's the same for Android and others?

Robin: the main page shows as mobile on my iPad. Even Mark Zuckerberg says iPad isn't a mobile device :D

Hmm, you'd think the plugin could tell, Art. I'll pass it on. Meanwhile, go to the bottom of the page, though, and you can click back to the regular view.

Robin,
I've tried several times now on my iPhone and keep experiencing this new problem; wanted to make sure you are aware.

When I receive automatic notification of an update on a thread on my iPhone and click it, it takes me to the top of the thread- not the most recent post. This is really annoying if the thread is more than a couple of postings long ( which is typical).

Thanks for listening,
Deb

I noticed that this morning, Deb. Mary is looking on, and don't worry, it's not like you're dealing with AOL or Gannett  or some other faceless corporation here. We won't stick everybody with something that doesn't work. It may be a few days of construction, buckets and pails lying around and holes in the ground, before we get out of beta testing, though ...
