A Happening Downtown

by Madeline Peters » Sat Jan 15, 2011 11:26 am

Mark and I took a drive to downtown Louisville last night to check out the town. The place was hopping. I was pleased to see how many restaurants were full of people including a line outside the door of Spaghetti Factory (what is up with that?) Anyway we made our way to Mozz and fought the crowds to the bar to try the Burrata Cheese. Cheese was great but what caught my attention was the dough they served with the cheese. On the outside it appear like loaf of bread but on the inside it was puffed up like a balloon. A good example of a very hot oven and well executed dough. Got a chance to meet the owner, Mike Cooper who was charming and welcoming.

We did drive by an area where the Mayan Cafe and 732 Social were located. We are looking forward to trying those restaurants. Is that location considered downtown or is it Butchertown? Anyway happy to see that the recession is not affecting Louisville!

Madeline - that area is commonly referred to as the East Market district or "NuLu," and is considered by most to be downtown. Butchertown is generally a little further to the northeast, where the Blind Pig is located. Butchertown's borders are roughly the freeways/Adams St. to the north, 64/Frankfort Avenue the east, Story Ave. and Main to the south, and Campbell St. to the west.

Well. I wouldn't say the recession hasn’t affected us. I’d just say that Louisville Local restaurant scene has done a fabulous job with adjusting to meet the changing needs of the market and simply do one thing great - meet the needs of their guests. Mozz, definitely an amazing addition to the East Market Business District. The Blind Pig - rode in on a trend and now- owns the trend. Staple Louisville restaurant over night. Toast on Market - one word - busy! But all of these places adapted quickly to a changing market. I don’t necessarily see it as "surviving the drought" as much as it being reflective of how solid their operations are. I imagine the folks at DECCA will follow suit - going to be a great concept once open. Please & Thank You / Vinyl: coming soon and having the privilege of being front row center of development, no one is anticipating it more than me. Know what I tell people when they ask about dessert at Social - The Louisville Beer Store.
Won’t say anything is recession proof - but I will say that things are going well and growing on East Market Street. We are very proud to be a part of the mix.

Not being from Louisville Mark and I felt blessed to have found a great location at the Vogue center for Coals Pizza. However, I just love your location. I had not realized you were the pioneer business for that area. Your antennae must have been right as you can feel the excitement in that part of town. There are so many fabulous buildings along that street. I drove my husband crazy as I make him slow down every time we are in the neighborhood. I have not heard of DECCA. Is that a new restaurant?

You are next on the list for us to try!
