Evening News reports Tubby's Pizza closing.

by Roger A. Baylor » Sat Jan 15, 2011 8:48 am

It's like losing the guy next to you in the foxhole. How exactly to compete with man-eating chains? I'm thinking of asking Louisville area mixologists to see if any of them have a recipe for a Molotov Cocktail.

Tubby’s Pizza is expected to serve its last pie Jan. 22.

CLARK COUNTY — The business, at 103 Quartermaster Court, is closing its doors for good after 25 months in business there.

“We just couldn’t compete with the $10 pizza(s),” being offered by nationwide chains, owner Steve Harris said.

Wasn't this the third iteration of Tubby's and the second at this location?

Robin, I believe so. Didn't Steve take over the second version? The original Tuddy's was down the street, near the river.

Its a shame. Steve is a great guy, and they made really good pizza. Sometimes you just can't keep a good thing going.

This bums me out but the last several times I tried to go there they were either closed during their posted hours or they coudlnt deliver for some reason. I suppose this has mounted for a bit.

We ate there last night around 6:30, only one other table besides us - pretty much on par with the other times. My wife and I think it's in a bad location, but what do we know. There were plenty of cars parked outside, though they were all for the nasty mexican joint 75' away (tons of other parking around but people choose to park directly in front of Tubbys and walk past. Sucks. CPC please don't be going anywhere, you're our only salvation left.

This sucks !

Steve is a good guy and makes good pie, hopefully he'll land on his feet :D

CPC will continue to defy the chains, although 2010 was not a great year around here either.

 Are you talking about Puerto Vallarta, Brian? We haven't been to the one in Quartermaster Depot, but its sibling off the New Albany outer loop - Charlestown Road? - is pretty darn good for that Mex-Anglo genre. I'd put it a step above the similar Aztecas and Nopalitos on the Shady Side.

My office is near the hospital...Puerto Vallarta is not at all nasty. They serve solid food. I eat there at least twice a month.

I've been trying to steer a couple of friends on the Jeff/Ctown border to CPC for about a year, but my "amazing quality" argument just doesn't win out for them. They cant get passed it being a pizza joint even though I point out that it is not so much pizza as it is a great meal, regardless of what kind of food. They eventually just say "its too expensive for pizza" and I just shake my head.

I'm really curious: Where do they eat and what kind of food passes muster?

If they don't want pizza, the lasagna is really tasty, as is the baked spaghetti. The garlic bread is absolutely crave-able.

Its sad really...when their doctor parents are in town it's Ruth Chris or bust. Otherwise, they do fast food and faster pizza. Some people don't have a need to make sense.
