What about Chick Inn?

by Tony D. » Thu Aug 16, 2007 2:51 pm

Used to be one of our favorite places, but we felt it never recovered after the reconstruction. I haven't been there in over a year, and I hear that people are staying away in droves. But, their doors are still open, so someone must be eating there. Anyone have any recent experiences (last six months or so) to share? Anybody with a long memory able to compare what it used to be to what it is today? Just curious.

I've been there a few times in recent months for breakfast. I had never been prior to the reconstruction so I had nothing to compare it to but I will say it was just 'ok'. Service was pretty slow.

Toni,
I definitely agree it isn't what it used to be. We've been there a couple times since the rebuilding and they have been spotty. One time the food will be good and the service OK. The next time the food will be OK at best and the service terrible.

I guess they just lost a lot of their longtime help while they were closed and haven't been able to get a stable dependable group of employees since. Of course it seems like a lot of restaurants are having the same problem these days.

We ate there last Sunday. Service was lackluster. The fried chicken was excellent but a chef salad was rather bland and an order of onion rings OK but not memorable. It'll be a while before I go back since there's so many other places I haven't tried yet.

Chick Inn

by Pam G » Thu Aug 16, 2007 6:23 pm

Chick Inn was sold a couple of years ago. I believe it is 2 couples that now own it. I agree that it seems slow to be served, but they do not start cooking until the order is placed. So the chicken does take awhile, but I still find it delicious.

Like I said the chicken was really good and I don't mind waiting for the bird to cook. I do mind waiting for menus and drinks when there are only 3 tables in the whole restaurant. The waitress was sweet, just strolling along in her own time frame. Like she was really bored to be there. THAT will keep me from going back more than an occational misfire in the kitchen.

I agree Carla. The sides are nothing special, but I love that chicken. I don't live to far from Chick Inn, but rarely go because of the service. I should just get the fried chicken to go.

That is so odd. I was there last Friday, and our food was fantastic, and the service was great.

Yes, it does take awhile to get food, but they're pretty upfront about it. I'd rather wait and get fresh, hot chicken than have them make it in advance, and get soggy, lukewarm chicken.

They do sell it to go, by the bucket, as well. ;)

I worked at a place in St. Matthews. It was very successful, busy all week and slammed on weekends. The owner decided to remodel and business never was the same. Even as a lowly cook I could see it. The dive was killed and when it died it took the crowds.

I remember the 70's Chick Inn and I ate at the new one last summer.
I had the fried chicken was told of the impending wait, no problem.
The chicken was great and the service proudly slow.

My wife and I ate there early yesterday evening. The restaurant was less than half full when we arrived around 5:30, but was quite full by 6:30. The service was adequate but not great - my iced tea remained empty for long periods of time. The meal was serviceable - the chicken was crispy and not dried out, but the breading tasted somewhat burned - as if the fryer oil had not been changed. The french fries were extremely greasy and limp.

I think if it were any other place I wouldn't return, but since it is the Chick Inn I've kind of given it a pass and will hope they improve on my next visit.

Overpriced disappointment with lousy atmosphere and lousy service, IMO.
