I went to Cary's again this Friday night for dinner. I was even more impressed with the food than the first time I went. The service is a little slow and disjointed but the food is fantastic. I (and two other people at my table) had the Bistec de Res. It was a thin, very tastily marinated top sirloin (i think) steak, topped with lightly sauteed onions, served with 2 sides. I ordered the fried plantains and the congris, which is black beans and rice cooked together. The flavors were spot on; it was delectable. Another person at our table got the ropa vieja, which was tender and well-seasoned shredded beef cooked in a sauce made from tomatoes, onions, peppers, and a few olives. It would have been delicious with some corn tortillas. For her sides, she had black bean soup, and a tomato salad; both were very tasty as well. This place is a little intimidating if you don't speak Spanish, but it's definitely worth the confusion. It's a little hole in the wall in a strip mall on Poplar Level (5019 on the left if you're heading south from Watterson). They don't have much to offer in the way of beverages, so we had a few Corona's with our meal. With an appetizer, two entrees, one Flan, and 4 Corona's, our ticket was around $34. You really can't beat that. This place is definitely a well-kept secret. I'd love to see them get more business.
