2 Great Experiences

by Kris Billiter » Thu Dec 09, 2010 9:57 pm

I don't post very often on here but thought I would chime in on a couple of experiences this week. First, my family and I had dinner at Cafe Lou Lou for my wife's birthday Monday. Great as always. We split the shrimp and grits app and a Lou Lou Pizza. This shrimp and grits were wonderful. Grits were very creamy, shrimp were perfectly cooked and the sauce was very good. It was light yellow in color with a little kick, and very different from other versions I have had in the past. The pizza with garlic sauce, bacon, red onions, roasted red peppers, mozzarella and goat cheese was also great! THe goat cheese just put it over the top. My 4 year old loved her pepperoni pizza and my almost 1 year old son had fun eating whatever he could get his hands on. Matt, our server was also great. Helpful and attentive but not at all over bearing.
On Wednesday I took one of the guys that works in my youth group who is graduating from seminary out for his going away lunch. We had never been to Havana Rumba so we went there. Fantastic meal. Started with the calamari which was near perfect. Well seasoned with a light coated and perfectly cooked. We then split the combination meal designed for 2 people. I can't remember the name, but it was huge. Steak, chicken, grilled, chorizo, beans, rice, sweet Plantains, and tostones (sp?). Steak was well cooked and flavorful and the chicken was great! We left absolutely stuffed. Our server Agelica was pro and I was sure to let management know. All in all 2 great experiences at two of my favorites in the city. Just thought I would share!

I'll add a random great (and unexpected) experience...

...Zanzabar.

Stopped in for pre-game drinks before UK/ND the other night. Cool little place, and a pretty impressive menu. Seems like a place Guy Fieri would like.....unsuspecting hole, with above-average good.

Their special was Pan Seared Scallops over Coconut Sticky Rice, in a Thai Lime/Cilantro Curry. Normally, I'd never order a dish like this at a 'bar' but something told me this place would deliver.......and it did. It was one of the better meals I've had in quite awhile.

...and I'll add that I enjoyed it MUCH more than Eiderdown. I'll admit that we arrived too early for the dinner menu, but the Burger as average and I didn't enjoy my Pork Sandwich at all. The texture was way off for me.

Plus, the atmosphere I found to be just awful. Are they still working on the inside, or is that it? It was about as bland & depressing as any restaurant I've ever been in. If that's how pubs in Germany are, then I have little desire to venture over there.

Two for me:

Went to Mozz with 3 others on Wed evening. I've never seen a menu with a wider price selection: you can easily spend $12-100/person. We got a couple of orders of fresh mozzarella from the mozz bar and then each ordered a pasta dish around $14. Great evening--good food--very attentive service.

I'd never seen Taylor G's Jamaican Jerk Take Out until today when I was dropping a book off at the main library (332 West Broadway, Louisville, KY 40202). I stopped in about 11:15 and they were not quite ready for the lunch onslaught, so there were out of beef patties (big downer) and curry chicken (slight downer). But I had an excellent order of jerk chicken (all main dishes are $8.00 with rice/beans and a salad). I'm happy to have a nearby place for Jamaican.
