Another local coffee/local beer stout ...

by Robin Garr » Mon Dec 06, 2010 5:17 pm

Press release ... let's see, Heine Bros and BBC partnered on a "coffee stout," and hasn't someone else paired to do something similar? Now Red Hot Roasters and Cumberland Brews partner on yet another dark, hefty brew that keeps you awake to enjoy another.

Cumberland Brews has brewed up a new beer -
RED HOT ROASTERS REDEYE STOUT.
To celebrate this holiday season brew there will be
a special event at Cumberland Brews, 1576 Bardstown Road,
Tuesday, December 14, 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. Guests may purchase
pints of the new brew or go for a unique gift by purchasing a
Holiday Gift Pack which includes a Glassworks' handblown beer mug,
valued at $75. alone; a 10 percent off Glassworks "Blow Your Own" mug
coupon; a $5. Cumberland Brews gift card and a Red Hot Roasters
2 oz. bag of coffee, all for $75. The Glassworks' van, Juicy Lucy, will be
at the event as well.

Red Hot Roasters Redeye Stout is made with the addition of Red Hot Roasters
coffee twice in the brewing process. First it is added during the boil and later
cold press RHR coffee is added after fermentation.

If I am not mistaken, Cumberland had previously partnered with Ray's Monkey House for a brew. I think there's someone on the forum who might be able to uncloud my memory.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

I recall from a couple of years ago that DCE and BBC paired a coffee stout. I believe it pre-dated David's transition to NABC. Too bad there's no way to CC someone on this.

Good memory Jackie! BBC-Production would blend DCE cold-extract with BB Stout before it was put into the bourbon barrels.

Indeed they did. Being right next door helped.

Well, this is going to show some age I guess, but in the earlier years at Cumbeland we started with Heine Bros 2004-2007, then Rays around 2009, But now we are trying out a few things with Sondra @ Red Hot Roasters, starting with Stout. Other small batch versions to follow all winter.

But who's counting anyway
Cheers...

Who's counting? Not me! Mark, you apparently had a PR person send out the notice on this for you, and I think in their enthusiasm, they crafted a press release that might have made this excellent project seem a little more "innovative" than it actually is. Not to take anything away from it, at all. I'm looking forward to getting a taste of it ... I just can't decide if it's better with breakfast or after dinner! 8)

There were also non-branded coffee stouts at BBC and CB prior to the Heine versions. I used Kroger French Roast beans because it was on sale. A good friend of Mark and I, Phil "Biscuit" Timperman, worked out BBC's first Heine Stout circa 1996. The first Heine stout was the third coffee stout I made at BBC.

I like Sondra's coffee a lot and think its darker roast will be perfect with stout. I am also happy to see our best locally owned craft brewers (coffee & beer) still working together for our drinking enjoyment! Get some.

Toss one more into the mix. BBC Clay and Main and Liquor Barn will be releasing the "Javadog" soon. I am brewing up a pilot batch (15 barrels) Thursday. This batch will be draft only, most likely going to bottles early next year with the perfected recipe. It will be an Oatmeal coffee stout.

Sweet! Who's supplying the coffee?

We talk with Hob Knob all the time, but haven't moved on it yet. Jared did a big coffee porter last January as part of the BIG Winterfest ReplicAle using Coffee Guy Ed Needham's beans.

Maybe Ricky could do a coffee project like the IPA project he did for your 10th Anniversary. Pick one variety from each local roaster and design a beer around the bean.

Joel,
Javadog sounds pretty awesome, looking forward to a pint.

Dave,
Cool idea with the design of Beer around different locally roasted beans.

Hey,
If you guys get a chance stop in for a Flathead Cherry Porter, small batch, a little more chocolate and addition of the Cherry during fermentation. Pat mailed me the Cherries from the Flathead Lake MT. this past fall. And if I don't see or talk to you all again- Merry Christmas

Somebody needs to schedule a brewery meeting soon a.k.a ( drinking session )

Mark

I brewed a batch of your brother in June. He & I discussed having a tapping event when he's home for Christmas.

Since there are already two breweries selling BP, we call it Jaxon. This is a new addition in our brewers best friend. It's named after my 4 lb. Maltese. Big beer, little dog. I think this is the best batch ever, all malt, no extract, sugar or other ethanol boosters. It is also 12% ABV instead of its usual circa 10.5% ABV. Dry hopped twice for good measure. I think it will do your brother proud.
