The best Calzone I've ever eaten: Papalino's!

by Ed Vermillion » Sun Dec 05, 2010 7:14 pm

Not much open in downtown Louisville that delivers on a Sunday. I remembered that Papalino's had expanded their delivery area to 3 miles. Quickly googled and we are 2.7 miles away! Ordered a cured bacon, mushroom and red onion calzone. When it arrived is was still warm and redolent of ricotta, mozzarella and garlic. The first bite signalled something special. The crispy bacon melded with the onion and cheese with the 'shrooms bringing that funky, earthy note. That was food art popping on the tongue! The title is the truth: This was the best calzone I have ever eaten and it's living here in Louavull! Tante grazie!

We got a pizza today and we're in Clifton at 2.6 miles. Papalino's delivery makes me ridiculously happy!

I'm 0.9 miles away at home, and 0.8 miles away at work, so I've usually just walked up, like I did last friday night :V

Not sure where you are in Crescent Hill, but it's only 2.3 miles from Papalino's to my place near Heine Bros. via Grinstead Drive. I had to work with Google Maps to make it see the closest route, though. It wanted to send the pizza guy in Baxter and across East Main, Mellwood and Frankfort to get here, which would have been 3.9 miles. I wonder if something similar happened on your map check. And, hmm, pizza for dinner tonight? 8)

After some tinkering I found the Grinstead route to be 2.7 miles. Here I thought I was beating the system.

So, based entirely on Ed's recommendation, the wife and I just devoured two calzones from Papalino's. We ordered delivery. The young lady on the phone was very friendly and helpful and the ordering process was easy. Delivery time was reasonable for our order and the young lady delivering was friendly and cheery despite the horrid cold weather.

The food was amazing! We ordered a house salad and it was very good, but the dressing was the real highlight. Please, oh please tell me they make it in house! It pretty much guaranteed a salad for each of us on all subsequent orders.

The calzones were very good. I got a spinach, pepperoni and roasted red pepper, my wife got the same sub mushrooms for red pepper. Both were exceptional! A perfect blend of flavors, the spinach will go into every calzone I subsequently order! Best of all, the calzones were just the right size. Some places think a calzone should be a medium deep dish pizza folded in half and stuffed with as much stuff as you can put in there. It's too much. But Papalino's knows. They realize that the crust must balance with the fillings and not leave you bloated and remorseful at the end of the meal. I ate my entire calzone and felt fully satisfied, but not miserable. Perfect flavors, great crust, and the perfect portion. Ed is correct, this is one of the best calzones in the city. We will order again, and again.

Oh, and we also got a couple of cannoli, and they were rich and delicious!

Thank you, Ed!

The first Google map I tried had the driver go down Bardstown to the Waterson and off at Zorn- 13 or so miles! Then Google tried the Main St route. Mapquest got it right.

Ronnie, their balsamic is a house made dressing. I have to leave this thread alone, I'm craving a calzone now.

Regarding the calzones......

Ricotta??
Sauce inside the calzone or served on the side?

Thanks! :D

Thank you all for the kind words! Yes, we do make the balsamic dressing in house. The calzone is made with ricotta and mozzarella, the sauce is on the inside and it is also served with 2 sides of sauce. Hope this clears up everything. We do make some delivery exceptions if we are not busy and its not to far out of the delivery area.

Thanks again!

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but, Heather, a while back you recommended your friend's cleaning service on the "About Louisville" thread: http://forums.louisvillehotbytes.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12229&p=105534&hilit=Cleaning+service#p105534

Shortly after that, I found myself in need of such a service. I am now using her. She is superb! Thank you, Heather.

Thanks for the info Allan! I can vouch for the wonderful house salad and balsamic dressing as well. We came in sunday for an early dinner and had a couple of slices and split a house salad - phenomenal all the way around!

Hi Gayle! So glad you took a chance on Carrie and happy to hear it is working out well. I know she really likes working for you as well.....

that dressing is heaven and perfectly compliments the baby greens mix. Thank you! I'm enjoying the wife's leftovers tonight for dinner! :D
